Whilst sitting in my lounge yesterday enjoying my retirement and looking across the way at the London Waterloo main line south of Brockenhurst, a single car unit of something (definitely not a locomotive) passed heading, I imagine, to Bournemouth TMD. Does SWT have any single car units and if so what was this one likely to be?

No it isn't - SWT donated it to a preserved line.

Could be a track machine of some kind?

See post #3, they used to have that multicoloured 121 based at Salisbury.

Which is now preserved down at the Swanage Railway - Now in BR Green with Speed Wiskers, and is rather indetifiable by it's ex sprinter centre windscreen wiper...

I had the lucky pleasure of seeing it en route from Salisbury to the Swanage, travelling south on the Test Valley line near Whaddon [north of Dean] whilst driving on the adjacent A36.
