Simplon Postcards - the shipping website

Founding editor Ian Boyle created Simplon Postcards (https://simplonpc.co.uk/) to showcase his passion for passenger shipping and his wider transport interests. He travelled extensively, took thousands of photographs, and built up a fine collection of postcards. The site was developed over a 20 year period and now contains over 2,300 pages and 148,000 images.

Simplon was a significant publisher of postcards too, but ceased some years ago. They can still be found on eBay etc.

The Simplon Postcards website now has me as its new editor. I run a number of websites, mostly with a transport theme, and have a particular interest in "digital archiving". This is the third site that I have taken over in recent months in order to preserve public access to a valuable body of work.

I don't have the knowledge that Ian has, but can keep sites up to date with the latest requirements. For instance, sites should be secured (i.e. prefixed with https://) for search engines to list them prominently. Other changes include:

1. There is a new Home page. It should work better on all screen sizes from phone to desktop. And cosmetically, it is more in keeping with current expectations.
2. The menu bar down the left has headings that open and close. That should make it easier for users to navigate.
3. There is a biography of Ian Boyle now published.

Other than that, I've respected Ian's style and not made changes for the sake of it.

Thankyou for preserving this site - I've loved using it for years. The menu has always been rather clunky, so it looks like a useful tweak you've made there!
