I am going down to kent on one day, but am not sure if I will be travelling back one evening (off peak) or the next morning (peak). If I buy an off peak return (return valid one month after purchase) will I be able to excess the return portion to a peak.

You will be able to excess the return half, but when you excess the ticket type I don't think fare halving occurs, so it'll be the full peak fare you excess to.

They don't do month long anytime returns though

In that case, if you return in the peak you'll need to buy a peak single. The general ruling where there's only an off-peak period return is available is journeys under 50 miles

Can you be clearer, please? I think we need origin, destination and the ticket type you expect to hold when you may want an excess fare. Also, railcard details if one is involved.

If you return on the Thursday morning, would both the High Brooms - London and London - Colchester legs of the journey occur at peak times?

I'm not sure if going from london to colchester in the morning is peak (it would be peak if going the other way, as I'd be aiming to arrive in colchester at around 0820)

can you excess off peak single to off peak return?
I think we have debated this topic before and we came to the conclusion that the rules are silent about when the right to excess a ticket ends. Those working in the industry took the view that you should have no difficulty excessing an off peak single to an off peak return before or during the outward journey but that few staff would be willing to issue such an excess after the outward journey had been completed. They took the view that the contract for travel had been completed and the ticket had no residual value.

John

so basically, buy an off peak single, then either excess to OP return, or buy a new anytime single if needed then?

That depends when you will know whether you will be returning at a peak time. If you don't know until the outward journey has been completed, then the excess option may not be available to you.

John

ah, well, since it's only £3 more than the single, I'd be best off getting the return then

If you do buy an Off-Peak return and then find that you can't use the return part and must buy an Anytime single, the unused portion of the Off-Peak return ticket remains valid and is valid for break of journey. So, even if you don't go back to High Brooms within a month, you may be able to get some use from the ticket.

oh, so I could in theory only buy a single to London later on in the month and use the return part for that, that's good!
