It is with some worry that I post my first missive.....
Found this site after Googling "Silverlink Swansong", an act prompted by the passage of 1Z47 past my signal box on Saturday morning! (The first time I've seen real passangers!)
Curious to know why motive power was shared by a relatively tatty class 37 at one end and the beautifully restored "Defiance" 50049 at the other. Anyone know?

might be because one of the silverlink managers is a big 50 fan and has a name plate and emblum ( warspite) in his office.
Not sure what you are asking, but if you are wondering why the 37s are in a poor state, it's because they are owned by EWS!

When first planned, it had been hoped to use a pair of 50s - but unfortunately there's only one operational mainline certified 50 at the moment, hence the use of a 37.
Did you see the Silverlink Swansong 1? And what box are you at?

The driver on SS 1 was an absolute thrash merchant. Anyone remember Watford Tunnel? (or leaving Watford Jcn for that matter!)

Well, what I was really trying to ask: why not a preserved loco at both ends! The class 37 just looked so sad in comparison.....

No didn't see the first train (1Z34) on Saturday 3rd, I wasn't on duty (at Willesden Carriage Shed North signal box) that day. So the arrival of SS2 (1Z47) on the 10th made a pleasant change from the usual routine, but a bit of a pain as a number of facing points had to be secured by the Willesden MOM.

I was on SS1 and looking for somebody to shout at, but both siggies and the MOM were hiding.
BTW, I saw you on the box steps watching the Atomic Harbour Master (20th October) changing engines on the relief lines about 2200 hrs - would have given you a bellow, but it was too far across.

What good eyesight you've got! Yes it was me working the night shift Sat/Sun 20/21 October. I do recall seeing some light engine moves on the Willesden Relief Lines that night, but couldn't really see what was going on due to loads of pesky wagons on the Wembley Yard arrival/departure roads!

No, that signal has been knocked over twice now

There is not much clearance where it sits and I think that it was somehow getting moved slightly to the extent that the route indicator got clouted by an incoming train, shattering the base in the process. Hopefully won't happen again as the concrete base it sits on has been buried a bit more this time.Speak to you on Friday (lates)
