Just looked today at the new single fare to Hinckley from Nuneaton or Bedworth

Single fares: AnyTime from Nuneaton £4-40 (One station)
From Bedworth £3-70 (Two legs of one station each cahnging at... Nuneaton)
The offpeak fare from Nuneaton is £3-80 (there is not one from Bedworth)

FYI the Nuneaton fare is priced by XC the Bedworth one by LMR

XC have increased their fares higher than other TOCs over the years, particularly recently with Arriva (shh!) taking over the franchise, and also in c2002 with Operation Princess, so over the years fares priced by XC have ended up disprortionately high. This means it is often cheaper to do one of two things:
1) Buy combinations of tickets set by different TOCs (e.g. DBY to SHF (EMT) plus SHF to YRK (NT)) is a lot cheaper than DBY-YRK; or
2) Buy a ticket to a destination beyond your intended destination in order to get the fare to be set by a TOC that charges a cheaper price per mile.

As TOCs increase their fares at different rates, over time these anomalies only increase. And that's before you address the issue of differing restrictions....!

yes i wanted to go to Birmingham from Manchester. A day return is not available. It is £51 SOR. Buying a SDR Manchester to Stoke costs approximately £12 and a SDR Stoke to Birmingham £14 - a saving of approx 50% on the Crosscountry fare! and almost every XC Manchester - Birmingham train calls at Stoke.

Now talk of silly fares heres one it costs £10.00 for an Advanced Single Through Ticket from Norwich to London Euston which there is no Rail Card Discount on this ticket but an Advanced Single with Rail Car Discount to London Liverpool St is £3.95 and an anytime Single from LIverpool St to Euston is £3.35 gives you a Total of £7.30 which saves you £2.70.

So inorder to get your Rail Card Discount you have to buy two seperate tickets quite bizzare allthogh it does cost an extra 60p from what it would do if the discount was available on the through ticket but yet the Railway is still makeing an extra 60p out of you but on the other side you are still saving money if you do your research for which how many people do before they buy such a ticket.

Another one here in Liverpool area is from Widnes to Hough Green is 70p anytime SGL FROM Hough Green to Halewood is 80p Off Peak SGL total of £1.50 which is cheaper than the through ticket which is £1.80 which for traveling Off Peak saves you 30p even if traveling peak which the Peak Single is £1.00 from H-Green to HWD you still save 10p buy Buying Separate tickets.

Ok it only fairley small ammounts of money but i see it as a matter of priciple and over a period of time can be quite a big saving.
