Not as easy as it looks so be careful! (Especially train drivers answering the test!)

1 This question relates to an automatic signalled section of track. Going
through this section the train passes signal 1 then 2 then 3 etc in that
order. All signals are currently displaying green. Under normal situations:

a) when would signal 1 turn to red?
b) when would signal 1 turn to single yellow?
c) when would signal 1 turn to double yellow?
d) when would signal 1 turn to green?

2 This question relates to a controlled signalled section of track. Going
through this section the train passes signal 1 then 2 then 3 etc in that
order. Under normal situations:

a) when would signal 1 display a proceed aspect?
b) when would signal 1 revert back to red.
c) When the overlap of number 2 signal became clear what would happen to number 1 signal?

Unless I've missed something...

1a) (Normally?) When the train occupies the next track circuit in advance of the signal (which might not be until the far end of the overlap).

1b) When the train clears signal 2's overlap and signal 2 is proved to be at Danger.

1c) When the train clears signal 3's overlap, subject to the above.

1d) Assuming signal 4 is automatic: when the train clears that signal's overlap, again subject to the above.

2a) When the route has been set, all track circuits in the route clear, all points in the route and required for flank protection detected, any level crossings proved clear, next signal proved alight, approach control conditions satisfied.

2b) Depends on the installation, but often when the train occupies the next track circuit in advance.

2c) Normally nothing, unless the facility was provided to allow that signal to be worked automatically.

train clear the overlap of signal 3
d) when would signal 1 turn to green? When the rear wheels of the train
clear the overlap of signal 4
