I was previously asked if I could map signalling types on the network. I got a bit of time this weekend to complete the legend but I've have a few questions which hopefully someone can help.

  • Some routes in the south have 'AC', I'm not sure if that's valid? SW190
  • SW175 doesn't say what it is. Reading the text, I want to assume TB.
  • Some routes dont say what they are. Can I assume TCB? I'll leave grey for now. SO320.
  • Quite a few routes with mix don't precisely say where the signalling changes and just displays a different type on the next page. Can I just assume it's at the first mileage I see?
  • Heathrow has TCB and ERTMS, which would be best to use please?
  • What type of signalling is HS1 please?
I'm open to any questions and thanks in advance.

EDIT: Have just checked, I would hazard a guess 'AC' stands for Axle counters. SW190 is a mix of 3- and 4-Aspect Signalling controlled from Basingstoke ROC.
SW175 doesn't say what it is. Reading the text, I want to assume TB.
Sw175 is Tokenless block between Dorchester and Maiden Newton, No Signaller Token Release/remote Token between maiden Newton and Yeovil, not sure on Yeovil to Castle cary, but think NSTR
Maiden Newton to Pen Mill is Key Token, Yeovil Jn to Pen Mill and Pen Mill to Castle Cary is Track Circuit Block (the signals are 'slotted' at either end on both Single Line sections).
Some routes dont say what they are. Can I assume TCB? I'll leave grey for now. SO320.
SO320 is Key Token working.

No idea, although if you send the source data in a PM I could give a reasonable guess. If it's between TCB boxes then each line can change at different mileages.
Heathrow has TCB and ERTMS, which would be best to use please?
ERTMS on the branch but not sure exactly on the junction boundaries
What type of signalling is HS1 please?
TVM-430

Thanks for taking the time for answering the questions.

I'm using the Sectional Appendix but it seems to be most mixed routes. The last one I saw was SW115 around Honiton moving from page 13 to 14. On top of page 13 it's TCB, the top of page 14 is TB and the top of page 15 is TCB again.

Thanks again.

I can't directly access NESA right now but can see the Signal diagrams and SW115 is a bit of an awkward one - it's primarily Track Circuit Block but there's a small section of Tokenless Block at the handover between the Basingstoke (WOE) Workstation and Salisbury Box through Tisbury Loop (because the Loop has signals but the Main does not).

I forgot that I could look at Signal diagrams :D

Is there a reason why some tracks switch between different types?

Tokenless Block is between Tisbury and Wilton Jn, not just through the loop, if I'm not mistaken. Salisbury panel controls both ends and thus effectively works to itself.

A few observations from West Country:

Topsham Exeter Exmouth is OTNS.
Crediton - Barnstaple is NSTR (passing place with remote machines on platforms at Eggesford, Crediton machine in box)
I think Crediton - Okehampton will be NSTR eventually, although I understand only one instrument is currently in service with a single token at the SB in Crediton, being used as OTS.
DSR Paignton - Kingswear not shown. It is TCB.
Totnes SDR - Buckfastleigh is ET, with OTS for short connecting line to NR station.
WSR is ET throughout, although section to NR connection could be considered NSTR as remote crew-operated machines are provided.
Yeovil Penn Mill - Maiden Newton is NSTR I think due to remote instruments at Maiden Newton (other end in signal box)

I think I've done all the changes and added the ones missing. I did notice a lot of the time on the Sectional Appendix that they had just put "OT" instead of "OTS" or "OTNS" so wasn't sure which one to pick.

West is best
TOWS - may be Train Operated Warning System. It’s a fixed installation warning system used by engineering staff to know to stand clear of the track, as it sounds a warning when a train approaches or is in the area covered by the system.

It gets its information from the signalling system, which must be either TCB using track circuits or the equivalent using axle counters.

However the places you listed in your post are not on my region, so you may want to wait until someone who knows for certain answers.

Do you have any special criteria for which preserved lines are shown?
Midland Railway at Butterley is shown but not Peak Rail at Matlock - both connect onto National Rail.
Ecclesbourne Valeey is not shown and does not connect to NR

It depends on what comes with the source data (NR) and whether or not I have time to draw the extras.

SC103, SC106, SC115, SC1150, SC116 and SC129 are all TCB throughout.

SC035, SC036, SC135, SC149, SC153 and SC177 are all OTNS.

The map shows SC141 (Craigendoran Jn to Fort William) as RETB throughout; however, Craigendoran Jn to Helensburgh Upper and Fort William Junction to Fort William station are TCB.

SC195 (Aberdeen to Inverness) is TB between Kennethmont and Elgin (not TCB).

Thanks. I just had to fix NW8017.

SC103, SC106, SC115, SC1150, SC116 and SC129 are all TCB throughout.

SC035, SC036, SC135, SC149, SC153 and SC177 are all OTNS.

SC195 (Aberdeen to Inverness) is TB between Kennethmont and Elgin (not TCB).
Thanks for these. I've fix SC141 and Fort William but I've left Craigendoran Jn Helensburgh Upper as RETB as according to NESA it's Helensburgh Central that is TCB.

Thanks again. I've published the latest version.

Yup, that's an error in the Sectional Appendix. Craigendoran Jn to Helensburgh Upper is TCB, controlled from Yoker S.C.

SC197 (Kittybrewster Jcn to Waterloo Goods) is OTNS, not TCB. That's another error in the Sectional Appendix.

This has been fixed. Thanks for the info, I'm noting down the errors and will send them to the appropriate person within NR. :)
