Signaller Interview tips

Hi all,

I have an interview with Network Rail for a Signaller position at Feltham. Ive made it through the assessment centre and thr numerous other stages to get to the 1:1 interview. Does anyone know of the type of questions they are likely to ask? There are old threads with a couple of examples but wondering if they are still relevant?

Hi lads,

Firstly, good luck to you both!.

I'm a signaller and although some of the questions have changed, the information they normally like to hear is still the same.

They like to know you have done your homework, so they can ask you what you know about network rail, have a look on our website. We've just appointed a new top chief and of course HS2 is a big project, but there are also other projects around the railway, so a little bit of homework shows you are taking the interview and the position seriously.

Important things as a signaller are that you can remain calm under pressure but can make decisive decisions in split seconds if need be. Don't just think regulating trains.... That's your day in day out stuff, think trespassers, fatalities, power issues, failed trains etc.... We don't expect you to know the rules and regs, you will get tought all of that, but knowing that you will have to make decisions involving these kind of incidents again will show the management that you're aware of some of the troubles we face on the railway.

Perhaps also find out what TOC (train operating company) operate along through felthams area. I believe it's SWT (South west trains) but don't just take my word for it.

Most importantly, just be yourself, remain calm and take your time when answering.... Remember, your new to the railway so we don't expect you to know everything

I know exactly what they'll ask! But I won't ruin it for you. My advice would be to look up the 8 non technical skills network rail are now so keen on and think about times you've addressed these in life.

Hi all, just wanted to post a quick message to say thanks very much for all your information. Had my interview yesterday which I felt quite comfortable with. Best advice I can now give is to do your research! I spent quite a while researching the company, what the job is about and their competencies. Waiting to hear back now if I've been successful.

They said I could be told by next Friday, so fingers crossed. So passionate to get the job anyway I don't mind waiting! The whole process has been long so used to it now. Thanks again all, I'll post again when I hear the news

Coming up to 7 weeks since I had an interview with still no news, which HR tell me isn't unusual, so I'm not holding my breath!

Every interview I had it was 8-9 weeks before I heard (apart from one, where i did hear a day after they said I would hear, but that was a temporary contract!)
