signaller/driver pay comparisons

hi all, newby here. Have been mulling over trying my hand at applying for a trainee drivers post then next time they come up with LOROL (I'm almost certain to be made redundant at some point in the next 3 months-2 years so am looking for other options). I've found quite a lot of literature on being a train driver, the working conditions and the pay that you might expect from the various operating companies. What I havent seen anywhere - must be looking in the wrong place - is what a fully trained signaller might expect to pull in (based in the South East). How does their pay compare to drivers?

Signallers are on a pay scale ranging from grade 1 which has the lowest pay, upto about grade 11. So it all depends what box your thinking of applying for.

Just out of curiousity, does a signaller who works in a PSB (ie. Clapham Jn or Doncaster) get a higher basic starting wage than someone who works in a signal box at say, branch line boxes?

Generally PSBs/ASCs, ICCs/IECCs are of a higher grade than branch boxes so a higher basic is inevitable.

In response to anonymous1001 I'm a senior network engineer for a telecoms company (have been in the same job with the same company for 10 years and did similar work for 5 years previous to that with others). It's all computer based (I dont go up poles!) so I suppose computer software engineer would also apply. The problem is that my department has shrunk from 75 people when I started to 12 now and we're currently losing 2-4 people per year. My skill set is outdated in the bright new world of voice over ip so I have the choice of spending a lot of time and effort training to get into that or trying something completely different and I'm feeling the pull of the 'and now for something completely different' !

At the big Power Sigal Boxes I believe most signallers are grade 8-10 and they are on about 40k.

Sweeeeeeet. I take it you work your way up the grade ladder, you cant just start at say Grade 7?

If there are vacancies that need filling then it is entirely possible to come off the street into a grade 7, 8 or 9 if you have the right stuff. Ive known people to go straight from a grade 1 to a grade 7 as well. A grade 7 I think equates to about £32k before overtime and Sunday workings.

Kings Cross have had vacancies not so long back and I think thats grade 9? Grade 10/11 are Signalling Shift Managers IIRC, but I might be wrong in that!

SSMs are usually 1 grade higher than the signallers they supervise.
