With signalling that is carried out from Rail Operating Centres, is that ETCS? Which has replaced Absolute Block signalling on a lot of lines, but AB is still in use alongside ETCS?

As the link says ETCS is only being tested on one short line at the moment, and ERTMS is only used on The Cambrian.

In my opinion using terms like "AB", "Absolute Block", "TCB", "ERTMS", "one in a bed" and so on is not in any way helpful to someone from outside the industry with no railway background who is asking for background on the job - it's far more likely to confuse than assist. How is he supposed to know what absolute block is and how that translates to the technology used to signal trains? And suggesting he reads Red For Danger is ridiculous. Apart from the fact that it's a pretty poor work to start with, it is hopelessly outdated and completely inappropriate for someone who hasn't even applied for the job yet.

You criticise, but you haven't said how you would have answered the question. I also provided a link to an excellent website that gives a very good explanation of all those terms and how they apply.

Absolute Block is still in use in many parts of the country, including the Box that the OP asked about, therefore the reference to it was quite correct.

And if Red for Danger is so poor, why is it still recommended as an introductory read for new signallers? Perhaps you would like to recommend a better publication?
