Signaller Assessment

I am due to be attending a Signaller Assessment day on Thursday in London and I was just wondering if anyone knew what to expect.

I know that it will last 4 hours, and will involve several assessments.

Am I correct in thinking that after each assessment the "bottom few" will be sent home, meaning by the end of the day only a select few remain?

Will there be an interview at the end, or is that likely to be on a different day?
Does anyone have any hints on what to say / not to say at interview?

Also, does anyone know (if I'm successful and actually get the job) where "Signalling training school" is going to be for the 9 week course?

First of all, what box is it? That will determine the length of signalling school. Ther is a few signalling schools now, paddock wood, peterborough, Doncaster to name a few!

Nobody leaves on the day, all 8 (might not necessarily be 8 though!) of you stay until the end, and you find out another day if you get through to the interview which will be at a later date.

I'll post a more detailed post tomorrow, but you will get practice material which goes over what you need to do. The tests are not particularly difficult, but they can be hard to understand what they want you to do (they will keep going through it until you understand though so don't be afraid to ask, and you get practices) They do test multi tasking and repetition very well though.

Carriageline, thanks for the speedy reply.

I've applied for Haslemere for which I have the assessment. I have also applied for Petersfield, although application closing date isn't until Wednesday so I haven't yet heard if I've gone through to the next stage, although would presume I might do.

I have managed to obtain a copy of the signaller recruitment selection test practice booklet and have been practicing like mad. The tests in the book seem pretty straightforward. I'm hoping to get through them ok providing nerves stay under control.

I had heard that people get sent home at various stages of the day, so I'm relieved to find that's not the case and we all participate in every test.

We'll just have to see what happens on Thursday.

Apart from the helpful booklet on Network Rail, is there any online tests or practice tests you can do.

I know when i was doing ATC they gave your some example tests first, and my mate when he was doing his train drivers ones bought a CD of example tests and assessments.

The lift one does not sound nice at all.

Afraid not buddy, you only have the booklet! (Although I have been reliably informed SE train drivers sit near identical tests in some places)

The lift one was okay, you just have to make sure you 100% understand it on the practice tests, and you get the correct answer is each time. The assessment staff are normally good and really accommodating.

Cheers. From what I keep reading the tests aren't test in a conventional way, as in the staff help you to understand the task and allow you to go through it. Would this be fair to say? I'm a long way off doing any at the moment as have yet to get chosen for the assessment days.

Yes and no. They make sure you 100% understand it, and will go through the practice tests as many times as everyone needs until everyone is 100% confident.

But once the real test starts you get no help

When I did the tests the woman supervising us spent about 15 minutes, no joke, explaining the lift beeps and playing the practice test to one of the people in are group (not me LOL ) but in the end she said she had to move on and the guy still thought you had to count all the bbeps.
