I was at East Croydon earlier today and noticed around the signal was a retroflective blue and white border on P4 London bound, why is this???

It is indeed a SPAD signal - only activated when the previous signal is passed at danger.

There is a web page which explains everything about them, but I cant remember the link - no doubt another forum member will post it.

As the link cf111 has posted shows it's to make the signal more conspicuous. There used to be one at Lenton Jn (Nottingham) the same. A SPAD signal has a plain blue background.

Its not a spad indicator at ECR its a multi-spad signal. Which means a signal that as has been passed a few times (more than once) at Danger.

Indeed. It's a southern region thing that multispad signals are bordered in blue and white stripes. A SPAD indicator is different...it is a blue signal with 3 lights on, the middle one has something like 'stop' it 'spad' across it.

The one at east Croydon is very useful as one if the reasons for the spads there is reading across due to curvature of the platform. So a driver in P4 saw the signal for P5 was off and proceeded against it being that you have 5 signals all in a line there. Drivers in P4 are told to ensure they are looking at the blue signal.

Fair enough. I've just never seen one on the GN routes so guessed it was a southern thing.

The surround on that position light signal is black and white. There are however other signals on the former London Midland Region that have blue and white surrounds. I don't think there are any outside the SR and LMR, though.
