Now then folks, how many of you have been standing near an SPT and heard it ring, and realised the signaller was calling you? Other than any S&T folks testing stuff, having the signaller call you at the SPT seems to be something of a rare privilege! :D

Does the "hotline" to my local box situated in my office count?

They are still mandated in the Group Standards for heavy rail, and as such are still provided and maintained, even here in Motherwell where we are in the midst of a resignalling. In fact, it is still considered to be a Wrong Side Failure if one packs in, even where CSR and GSM-R are available.

I’d be sad if they were removed, my history is as a Telecoms Engineer before redundancy elsewhere led me to Network Rail S&T. Now, while it is only a tiny fraction of my workload on any given day, maintaining and faulting SPTs is the only Telecoms related thing I do, and even that is at its most basic level.

I know of a driver who managed to lock himself out of the cab whilst changing ends in a quite isolated siding on an ECS move. (He said his T-Key sheared off.)

Had to pull an egress handle to pop a door and use the SPT on the signal controlling the exit.
