Dear All

I have a question regarding Signal Gantryies

What issues would ther be if a signal ganrty be utilised as a cable route for 650v cable supply?

Hope this makes sense

Technically there is no issue with the use of a gantry to pass a 650V cable over the track, however for a whole lot of obvious reasons this is not an optimal solution.

The preference would be to to cross from one side of the other by means of an Undertrack Crossing (UTX).

Where the route is equipped with OHL then consideration would need to be given to an Electro-Magnetc Interference issues between the two systems, as well as the implications relating to the continued maintenance of both systems, either jointly or separately.

Whilst it is the practice on LUL to carry cables over the track on a "cable bridge", this is not a practice that is normal on the main line railway. As with all things Railway, however, there will be exceptions and examples of where this happens. Birmingham New St at the north end being a perfect example where botht he 650 as well as the main cable route passes over the track in a special concrete bridge.

Many Thanks Old Timer

I forgot to mention urx/utx is out of the equation due to cost saving (buracrats).

Has everything been properly costed ? ? ?

The steelwork and foundations alone will likely far exceed the cost of a UTX.

Then there is the whole myriad of design and installation costs to be considered, and if it is OHL the portal will have to lifted across the OHL.

I would do anything to avoid a gantry.

On the south end of the WCML under BR a lot of signal cables were run through the latticework of the OHL masts themselves in a 4" plastic pipe. It was a cheap way of getting the cables across to the side away from the S&T route, while keeping them clear of the various P. Way activities.
