Quite happily swap places with them...!

Incidentally, if there are signalling problems, why are VTEC still operating with drags?

The 16:00 VTEC service from Kings X to Aberdeen which was due in at 23:10 finally arrived at 02:08 making it 176 minutes late

Seems like some trains were sat outside the station for at least 2½ hours.

2D37 sat on the approach from the Saltburn line for roughly that time, it's only just now gone back to Dinsdale. 1E18 sat on the Up Main outside the station for the same length, it's now just gone into platform 1. 1V66 is still sat outside.

It's those on 2D37 I feel sorry for, if indeed there were people sat on it for that length. Imagine 2½ hours sat idle on a 142? :|

How many are? I can only see 1E21, the only others I can see going via the coast are HST's.

2D37 was back in Dinsdale by 16:55, it was stood less than an hour.

Makes my 38 minute delay seem inconsequential in comparison!

I always find delays at York interesting. I know the delay was Durham/Darlington, but it was affecting York significantly.

I see York as a bit of a crossroads - you've got your North/South lines and your East/West lines.

But you find nigh on every time that the N/S is delayed, it affects the E/W - but often not vice versa. I'm guessing that's the priority put on the VTEC and other HST trains I'm guessing?

It'll be volume more than anything. There's one train an hour (the Scarborough service) that crosses the station. The other two trains per hour that do an E/W sort of direction (Blackpool North and Hull) both start/terminate there.

On the other hand on the North/South axis you have around six trains per hour (ignoring any freight that might be around). So if there is a delay that means they start stacking up you will run out of platforms or track for them to wait at very quickly. Whilst if there was a problem at say Malton it would take a long time for the issue to become so serious that it would affect the North/South services as it's only one train per hour, same if there was an issue at Selby it's only one train per hour.

Very true, the split to the E/W on the south side doesn't kick in until you get down to Colton Jn so they essentially don't split between S and W until a mile or so outside the station.

Seemed to be a fair few ECS pacers going north from Teesside to (presumably?) Heaton this morning

There was a plymouth service that didnt get to destination until 03:30. A reading traincrew member who was supposed to leave newcastle at 16:35 eventually travelled via london as his train was cancelled and booked off at 00:30, 4 hours late! One passenger from peterborough travelling to glasgow had her train cancelled at york, was sent to manchester to find no train, sent back to york, waited an hour and a half for a newcastle train to be put in a taxi from newcastle to glasgow. Her journey took over 12 hours, it should have took 4 1/2 hours. The taxi from newcastle would have took 4 hours alone! A newcastle bound TPE service ended up in Middlesbrough after getting as far as longlands, sent back bang road to thirsk to cross over to the fast lines and back again to get it into northallerton! Disruption on the mainlines can have network wide knock on effects.

I have known previous disruption on the ECML where a train trapped at northallerton low gates for over 5 hours was eventually evacuated as there was no prospect of movement anytime soon

i would like to point out that i was 375 miles away and have a cast iron alibi and was not trying to add extra haulage to my rover! ;)

The people i feel really most sorry for are the ones on the XC train (1V66?) that should have run through to Plymouth but was terminated at Birmingham at 22:40 running 210 minutes late! I wonder what time through passengers made it home?

I am not sure it did run through. Bloody late if it did!

My friend was on that on his way home form work. He was mightily confused by the train movements but made it to the pub in Northallerton in decent time

Hope the barriers were up or the locals will have been fuming and writing to the Councillors and MP!

Surely someone at Manchester should have taken charge and got her in a cab from there when it was clear there were problems!

Yeah that was fun it stopped at Eaglescliffe, dumped a few passengers off and said there you go, you (Eaglescliffe) deal with them please! Cheers TP. Had scores of passengers asking where am I? When is the next train to Durham/Darlington/Newcastle? (We had no Northern services to Darlington or Middlesbrough from 1629 to end of service).

They would have been if all there taxis wern't at Darlington station waiting for passengers off delayed trains from London :)

Aye it was challenging. They people who ended up here wern't to bad. No shouting at us fortunatly. Most of them were still here 90 minutes later when we left awaiting lifts to come down from Tyneside.

Spoke to guard caught up in that. He was getting misinformation and was asked by pax on board if he would be willing to let them get off at eaglescliffe. He advised them they could but they would have to make their own arrangements whereas TPE would take the mantle at middlesbrough. Pax elected to leave anyway. He was also advised trains were running from eaglescliffe to darlington, which turned out to be incorrect. He was also in receipt from a lot of grief from pax at thornaby who didnt believe him when he advised there were trains from thornaby to newcastle via the coast.

So fair play to him he was only passing on what he was being told, and thank you for taking up the slack at eaglescliffe. Dont forget to put the claim backs in!

I would have to agree there. Sure there were TPE services running with no issues and mutual ticket acceptance was in place. No doubt tho someone didnt get the info, decided it was VTEC's problem and sent her back. I made sure Newcastle knew of her pending arrival so she could be sorted out tho.

Hopefully it will all be going like clockwork tomorrow morning. I am due to meet my friend who is coming down from Newcastle to Peterborough.

Eaglescliffe is much improved from when I lived there in the seventies. You really would not have wanted to get stranded there when there was no ticket office, toilets or any form of passenger service via the Yarm route. On the plus side there was a regular service to the new station at Teesside Airport. Ah, the smell of creosote and the sound of nobody getting on or off!

And has just one train A WEEK! Even arriva saw fit to terminate its bus service as there arent any flights out of there these days!

Imho the current airport owners have killed off the airport as they want development land

No worries. When things go really wrong like Friday evening it tests you in your job and its certainly different experience from when all trains run on time! :)

All traincrew would be paid every minute & some for disruption. Being relieved would only happen in extreme circumstances & then a very slim chance anyone would be available to do it.

Most freight men are on annualised hours, so no extra money! On FLHH whoever would be relieving the delayed driver would have the option of travelling out in a company van, subject to signing the route.
