signal design engineer

Hi there, is there anyone on this forum that is a signal design engineer in the rail industry in this forum? I am interested in this career path. I really would like to be involved in the technical side of things in the industry. I have not worked in rail before, I was thinking that I would have to start as a signal technician and possibly work my way up from there. I do have a degree in Maths and I am currently working as a bus driver. Does anyone have there expertise to share in how I could at least start out on the ladder?

I've never been a signal design engineer but I am in what you might call 'allied trades'. It's possible that I have no clue what I'm talking about though.

IMHO there may be an easier way for someone with a maths degree to get a job as a signal design engineer than becoming a signal technician. That's not a bad job in itself, but of all the jobs in signals engineering I suspect designer is one of the ones where having been a signal technician is the least use. It could be a slow route too.

If you get in, you'll have to pass the exams to get on in the business so you may as well start reading up - https://www.irse.org/Qualifications-Careers/IRSE-Exam

You can do Module A without being a member and the reading list is all freely available. If you hadn't got a job in that line by October, I'd guess passing that would show readers of your CV you're properly serious.
