I am interested in finding out what is included in the operating rules and regulations that apply to a signal box, including local operating procedures.

Just a short overview of things that are included... it's for an assignment I'm writing. I think the local procedures include things like 'red bridges', what to do in the event of certain failures, resetting axle counters... is that right?

Thanks. I have visited the EMCC and most boxes on the Leicester area. It's mainly what sort of things are covered in the local procedures that I'm interested in.

Eight weeks? More like thirteen nowadays!

As above, it's all in the Rule Book (available online here) - the 'TS' modules are the signalling regs, but a lot of the rules in the other modules are just as important. Local instructions are covered either in the Sectional Appendix (almost-current versions available somewhere on the Network Rail website) or Signal Box Special Instructions (not available online). The bridge strike instructions applicable to specific bridges are contained in the Bridge Strike Appendix (not sure whether that's online).

Well the question I have specifies on my area, which is Leicester but I imagine there are lots of general rules that apply everywhere. If I think of anything I'll be sure to ask. I have in fact visited you and your box, when I was with Oakham S&T earlier this year, if you can remember. I wasn't working on this question at the time though!

Most signalbox special instructions used to be on the "Portal" but I don't think they are on there any more (or are so well hidden that I can't find them!)

Don't forget that a fair chunk of the generic rules that apply to a signaller are now contained in the "National Operating Instructions" (available on "Connect"). Location specific instructions appear in the previously mentioned signal box special instructions and are unique to the signalbox concerned, examples of things that can appear are instructions for signalling in fog or falling snow, propelling and shunting movements, working of sidings and yards, bridge strike appendix and any special instructions for working to adjacent boxes. If you are with the S&T, ask the signaller if you can have a read through next time you are in a signalbox. (As Tomnick mentions, cake or biscuits might help )
