In my nice Cosy Signal Box :)
Hi everyone,

Sorry if this has been mentioned before,

Does anyone know if there are Signal Boxes in the UK that still use Block Instruments with Bells.

I believe that some of the Signal Boxes on the Settle & Carslie Line use them.

I have worked a Block instrument before on a Model Railway and I am interested to know is some still exist on the Real Railways.

Yes, literally dozens, perhaps even hundreds, of signal boxes around the country still use traditional block instruments.

I was taken to dunblane signal box some years ago as part of my guards training and the signalman was belling away the whole time.

Its one of the first things you learn at signalling school and you use them all the time.

And you never forget them. Been nearly 20 years since I did any Absolute Block signalling (or even Track Circuit Block with bells), still remember all the bell codes though!

Wait until you work a token machine and block bells on a railway where the signalman is five miles away! It is fun!
