Does anyone have a definitive list of areas currently controlled by NX panels? I haven't been able to find anything particularly useful.

I'm afraid it's like when people ask for areas controlled by semaphore signalling and/or mechanical boxes;
you'll get loads of suggestions, some of which will be out of date, but there is not 'official' list available to
the public.

I understand there's no official list - a community list is fine so long as it's not terribly out of date (I can trace down recent closures easily). It's mostly for larger areas I ask, so I do think it's a bit easier than mechanical boxes where they often control small areas.

Warrington, Preston and Carlisle must be some of the larger ones remaining? Locally (to me) Rochdale West and Wigan Wallgate Station box are NX panels

Oh that's cool (just looked up what it is) I assumed there were levers in there since that's what I think of when I hear signal box, but that's cooler and makes more sense given the lack of semaphores to need levering.

I think Eccles might be too but could be wrong! Like you say quite a lot of these old on the outside boxes were changed over a good while ago, but obviously no clue from the outside I just remembered a really obvious one. Manchester Piccadilly!

Working on the basis that the OP’s intent refers to physical panels, as opposed to VDU-based systems operating NX-based interlockings, here’s the position in Scotland:

Kilmarnock
Fort William Junction (part)
Perth
Dundee
Aberdeen
Stirling Middle (Alloa line)

I believe that Tweedmouth, Alnmouth and Morpeth are still actual panels. Others that come to mind:

Doncaster
Scunthorpe
Colchester?
Upminster?
Three Bridges
North Kent?
Eastleigh
Swindon?
Gloucester
Westbury
Exeter
Plymouth
Bristol
Salisbury
Port Talbot
Manchester Piccadilly
Stoke?
Rugby?
Chester
Crewe?
Warrington, Preston and Carlisle

There will be other smaller ones that don’t immediately spring to mind.

Use The British Power Signalling Register: https://bpsr.org.uk/
Open the spreadsheet.
Select 'Interfaces' tab.
Use Autofilter and select for all entries under heading 'Interface Type' containing the text NX, then select for all empty fields under 'Decommissioned'.
The data claims to be correct as at January 2026 so should produce an accurate list though might not catch some of the the very latest closures or control transfers.

MarkYT's link is an incredible treasure trove of information!

I pulled this out from the vast amount of data, every NX panel remaining in the country in A to Z order including date commissioned including various versions replaced or updated over the years.

Is this somewhat inflated by the Local Control Panels though? I caught Cromer, North Walsham, Worsted and Whitlingham Jnc LCPs which I presume correspond to the Interlockings/ relay rooms under control of the single panel Trowse Swing Bridge box which definitely is not an NX panel.

And also, what is Three Bridges panel 5 doing commissioning new NX in 2014? Like for like renewal or is this list suggesting something different like the interlocking technology

From what I could work out rather than panel number it was showing an NX replaced by another NX? Carlisle for example just took over Kingmoor with a larger panel which I assume replaced version 1 which is why it shows twice. As for LCP I cannot say but they must be showing for a reason

My understanding of an LCP is that it allows each individual interlocking area to be manually controlled on-site if something cataclysmic happens to the normal signal box. I wonder how often they're actually used.

Or a failure of the communications medium between them. Useful for comprehensive testing of a new remote interlocking prior to hooking it up to the panel, for maintaining control during major signalling work such as renewing a TDM or panel processor system, and transferring control of an interlocking to a larger operating centre. I assume included LCPs use the NX route setting method. Some local panels use a more basic method than the main signal box panel. Those using OCS (one control switch (per route)), for example, or SFS (single function switch) would be excluded. The Cromer line has US style remote electronic interlockings in equipment buildings distributed at junction complexes along the route. While the usual control uses VDUs at Trowse, the individual areas have small local panels at each site.

Here's a very typical N. American installation with a local panel. I recall the Cromer line being very similar.

Working on the basis that the OP’s intent refers to physical panels, as opposed to VDU-based systems operating NX-based interlockings
Yes, that is exactly what I mean.

Use The British Power Signalling Register: https://bpsr.org.uk/
MarkYT's link is an incredible treasure trove of information!
Thanks so much - I will have a look. Will post soon about the project I'm planning, for which I asked about this.

And Inverness.
I thought Inverness had gone all-VDU fairly recently, but I’ll check. (Edit) Panel decommissioned end of 2024.

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

Use The British Power Signalling Register: https://bpsr.org.uk/
Open the spreadsheet.
Select 'Interfaces' tab.
Use Autofilter and select for all entries under heading 'Interface Type' containing the text NX, then select for all empty fields under 'Decommissioned'.
The data claims to be correct as at January 2026 so should produce an accurate list though might not catch some of the the very latest closures or control transfers.
To my eternal shame, I had completely forgotten about BPSR. That’s the work of retired Doncaster signalman Andy Overton, and unquestionably the most comprehensive listing of the various signalling systems/interfaces out there.

Working on the basis that the OP’s intent refers to physical panels, as opposed to VDU-based systems operating NX-based interlockings, here’s the position in Scotland:

Kilmarnock
Fort William Junction (part)
Perth
Dundee
Aberdeen
Stirling Middle (Alloa line)

I believe that Tweedmouth, Alnmouth and Morpeth are still actual panels. Others that come to mind:

Doncaster
Scunthorpe
Colchester?
Upminster?
Three Bridges
North Kent?
Eastleigh
Swindon?
Gloucester
Westbury
Exeter
Plymouth
Bristol
Salisbury
Port Talbot
Manchester Piccadilly
Stoke?
Rugby?
Chester
Crewe?
Warrington, Preston and Carlisle

There will be other smaller ones that don’t immediately spring to mind.

All the NX panels between Bristol and London Paddington have been decommissioned and replaced by TVSC.
That includes Swindon.

Bristol has lost the B, C and D positions (Temple Meads area, Bath area and Stoke Gifford / Patchway / Filton / Westerleigh / Charfield / Chipping Sodbury area) leaving just the A position (Bridgwater / Weston-super-Mare / Yatton area).

Newport, Cardiff and Port Talbot have been replaced by the South Wales Signalling Centre.

MarkYT's link is an incredible treasure trove of information!

I pulled this out from the vast amount of data, every NX panel remaining in the country in A to Z order including date commissioned including various versions replaced or updated over the years.

Both Exeter PSB and Westbury PSB are 1980s designs. Both are push-push NX types. As per normal practice at the time, they opened in stages. I can't remember the actual dates, but both were at least partly opened by 1989

My understanding of an LCP is that it allows each individual interlocking area to be manually controlled on-site if something cataclysmic happens to the normal signal box. I wonder how often they're actually used.

They are supposed to be operated by signallers on a schedule so that the signallers can maintain their competence and to check that they still actually work. However, it's not unknown for this not to happen.

Actually emergency use is rare.

Westbury was complete at the beginning of February 1985, except for the bit at Bradford Junction that was added in 1990. The end of 1987 for Exeter, except for Paignton North in March 1988 and South in August 1989 when it was moved into the station building.

.....And also, what is Three Bridges panel 5 doing commissioning new NX in 2014? Like for like renewal or is this list suggesting something different like the interlocking technology
This is 3 Bridges Signalling Centre (SC), not the nearby ROC, to which eventually the SC coverage will be moved, I understand.

I saw Whitlingham Jnc interlocking room out the side of the window today, on such a hot day I wouldn't want to be scheduled to work in that glorified shipping container.
Ipswich and Norwich panels are still NX.
Good to know, is that going to change anytime soon?

Well, the more recent REBs (Relocatable Equipment Building) are supposed to be provided with air conditioning. But either it works well, so if dressed for summer you may feel too cold, but if it can't cope with the heat, or its failed, the room becomes an oven... On a day like today, you wouldn't be able to stay inside for any length of time...

Older installations on the area where I worked just had a single extractor fan or nothing at all...
The brick relay rooms were just as bad.

If my dates are correct, that’s when panel 7 extended its control down the Arun Valley line to fringe with Arundel Signalbox. Although in recent history panel 5 has had it’s FDM equipment replaced between Keymer Junction and Preston Park and new Bi-directional signalling between Copyhold Junction and Balcombe tunnel junction, although I forget the exact dates now.

Based of locations I formerly worked the scope of the LCP was limited. Whilst in 'normal' operating mode they had control of signals protecting level crossings, the routes could be overridden by the respective controlling PSB.

However, when 'local control' was taken, it gave the signaller at that location control of loops and crossovers, without any intervention by the controlling PSB, though you then signalled trains at their direction. The usual instruction, when switched-in, was to work straight up and down unless advised. Each location was eexpected to take 'local control' for an hour or so each Saturday, for knowledge retention. You could be asked to switch-in at other times too.
