Sighting Class 59 - 59002

Can anyone please advise.

I was on the train yesterday between Gatwick Airport and Brighton when i thought i was pretty clear spotting 59002 carrying freight northbound.

However i was not 100% sure so googled it. Traditionally i have found class 59/0 have the yeoman livery however the loco i thought was 59 002 clearly supported the red DB Schenker. Has it changed ?

Any information greatly received ?

You may have seen 59202; all the 59/2s are DB machines. Incidentally, DB Schenker have now been DB Cargo UK for well over a year now, and the 59s are a bit behind in the re-branding queue!

You mean scraping off the 'Schenker' vinyl lettering?!

As per 59CosG95's post above, you actually saw 59202 "Alan Meddows Taylor MD, Mendip Rail Limited"
which worked the morning MendipRail trip to Crawley yesterday.

(59002 was stopped at Merehead for repairs)

Way off topic here but any excuse to blow my own trumpet......

Thanks to my dad who worked for BR I managed along with my two sisters and mother to get an invite to the unveiling of the Foster Yeoman class 59s in Somerset back in the mid 1980s. All I can remember was being in the cab of loco, Americans every where and it being a very hot summers day. Oh and the buffet was pretty good. Memories!

GBRf's 59003 is based at Bardon Hill currently and working between there, Colon Hill Yard (Shrewsbury) and Tinsley on aggregates (fine stone).

I take it that's auto-spelling being 'helpful' there and you were trying to write Coton Hill?

Ha ha - yes!

Although I can't blame auto-correct - it was my own 'auto-correct' error - I'd mistyped it as "Colton Hill", realised it should be "Coton" but edited out the wrong letter...!

Chelmsford, Watford, Allington(Maidstone) and Hamworthy,
amongst other locations in the South East.

Where are you based?

Seen 59003 between Sheffield and Derby a couple of times recently confirming the above routes.

Attached 7/6/17 through P6 at Sheffield, my technical ability is limited to getting it on its side, it took me long enough to get it there at all.

I'm frequently down the South end of the GEML, I've seen all the 59/1 and 59/2 either at Chelmsford, Stratford or locations inbetween. Never seen a 59/0 though.

You have been unlucky then, the 0s work the same trains as the 1s and 2s.

Also been known to visit the likes of Ardingly (just off Brighton Main line) and also Newhaven (East Sussex) although I'm not sure how often they 'visit' said locations.

Do they not still do the Chichester, Fareham or Botley trips Mark? I used to see a few coming through Eastleigh when I worked in the works a few years ago.

They can appear sometimes, but the Fareham/Botley/Eastleigh trains
tend to be DB resourced, so normally produce a 59/2 or 66 these days.

Oxford (Banbury Road) is the same.
