Does anyone have a reputable link to a free download of Sim Meier's Railway Tycoon - any of his railway games.

I downloaded one a few years back but I never saved the link - HOWEVER, I did download it and it was excellent.

Now I am trying to look for it again and can't find it. Any help guys?

The original Railroad Tycoon is officially "abandonware" and is available from various sources, this being one.

http://www.abandonia.com/

You will more than likely have to use Dosbox or similar to get it running as intended.

No it's not, "abandonware" is theft from a company that may not exist in the capacity it used to.

Abandonware is also stuff that the company has given away because its old and they couldnt make anytihng from it. if they give it away for free it might stir intrest in their newer products.

Transport tycoon has an open source version available (google Open TTD) pretty good game

Well seeing as the official site here is offering it for free I don't see how it can be construed as theft.

I'm not sure how 2k games is the official site, that company didn't come around until 5 years after Sid Miers released Railroad Tycoon, also that was done under Microprose who I guess is now Atari.

Okay perhaps not the 'offical' site but you can't be suggesting that 2K Games are offering an illegal download on their website are you? Because I suspect whoever holds the rights to Railroad Tycoon would have an issue with it, or at least they would if it wasn't abandonware.

The link to the 2k version is nothing to do with Railroad Tycoon, it is for a game called Railroads. two differant things. Checked out that abandonware site, god that brought back some memories. Cheers.

Yes, the site is the official site for "Railroads". However, one of the clickable tabs along the bottom says "Free Full Game - Railroad Tycoon". Click that and it takes you to the download button for the 14.2mb file.

Let's say it is owned by them. . . are they bothered that 2K games have the rights to offer it for free? No, otherwise the link would have been taken down ages ago.

Games that are so old, the developers don't really care what happens to them. Games that are on the abandon-ware site are considered free to play.

I'd like to see any company who had a game released in 1990 show they are actually bothered whether it is free on a semi-official abandonware site now or not. If you're so bothered, report the 2K website to Atari and see what the response is. Also, post it back here so we know how foolish you have been :P

Why did you quote me when saying that? I only responded to you stating the download wasn't there, I mentioned nothing about copyright.

Sid Meier - Railroad Tycoon
Sid Meier - Railroads

What has been stolen? Do you think he is not aware his current publisher is offering one of his earliest titles for free download?

Just a though, but does anyone feel like they would be interested in doing a multiplayer game where we start in the 30's and try to make a reasonably simulation of lms, lner and all that, the keep playing to see who wins

I wish they would make the original 'Duke Nukem 3D' abandonware - I played many a happy hour on that with my Pentium 133

Well it's available at the moment for $2.99 which is like £1.90 from here. Whilst it's not free it certainly isn't expensive, £1.90 won't even get you a pint!

It will if you go to a Sam Smiths pub ....

Word of warning though, stay of the Ayingabrau (sp?) it's rocket fuel in disguise! (And a source of just 1 or 2 headaches)

"Ayingerbrau" and don't even go there, many a story to tell on that stuff. :D
