sick of new type train boxes

my older models were great to run. you simply slid the polystyrene tray out, removed the train and run it. now it's those nasty transparent plastic pieces that folds around the train and it never wants to slide back into its box properly. i hate them. even using as little force as possible to do it you risk creasing / marking the boxes and de-valueing the item.

I have had the same problem with some MK1 coaches I purchased a couple of weeks back it has all that plastic crap and you have to unwrap it and when you go and put it back in the case it does not want to go and sometimes dents the box's edges a gives it that 'Worn' look which does not look nice.

Agreed I prefer the polystyrene packaging its nice simple and easy, although I think some hornby products still use that packaging like the HSTs I purchased last year and I prefer it much more no hassel when putting it back, neither does it bugger the boxes up either.

The only thing I like the plastic packaging for is on my Bachman Class 411 CEP model as it feels as if it gives it more protection.

funny u should say mk1 coaches. i bought 6 new style Bachmann mk1's and it's them i dont like, box wise. the fold round plastic thing has was held together by sellotape. once undone, the wrap round does not stay in place and you have to try and shove the thing back in the box so the box holds it from opening. some other models i got have dimples on the plastic fold which locks it around the loco.

Why don't you put a new bit of sellotape on it then?

Do you buy models to run or to collect, surely by running the model you de-value it anyway.

putting sellotape back on it? the design with the dimples allows it to be resealed and that is how they should be designed. what if suitcases came with sellotape then instead of locks? you'd be happy to close them back up with more sellotape?! the point i'm trying to make is that it was much better with a polystyrene tray.

Another stupid answer to a sensible question.
I wouldn't be stupid enough to buy a suitcase held together with sellotape, you are obviously different to me!
polystyrene is not recycleable, plastic is, but sod the environment eh as long as it makes your life slightly easier.

ok now, the 1st reply i had to this thread was a sensible reply. i have said nothing stupid, it's just that you saying to put the sellotape back on is like a sarcastic answer. there has never been a time before in model railways where putting something back its the box would require you to sellotape it back up so why say it in the first place. come on for god's sake this is silly

i was describing the method that bachmann had used to secure the coach in the plastic wrap around. it doesn't go back together, whereas other items of rolling stock i have, utilise those dimples which snap back together and you must have seen these. the design should allow it to go back together without needing to tape it back up, and if you are still disagreeing with this then i give up trying to explain anymore. and the other reply you gave about running the stock de-valueing it, you were assuming this. what is so unusual about getting a new item of rolling stock out of it's packaging to have a closer look? that doesn't devalue it. you might want to look at the inside tables in the coach for example.

The issue surely surrounds the box (and packaging) being damaged by frequent removal and devaluing the intrinsic value of the item. When James May bought his trainset at auction, handed the boxes to the office staff and walked out with the stock in his pocket, it did amuse me but I'm sure avid collectors were shouting at the TV!

yes indeed. i started the thread because i believe that the newly released models have a box that is hard to get the model in and out of, should you wish to either inspect the model, or test/run it. Royaloak has mentioned recycling issues with the older 'styrene trays but i'm simply voicing my opinions on this newer packaging method where items can't be easily replaced in their containers.
