Shunters Job - ScotRail

Hi all,

I’d applied for a Shunters job with ScotRail & had all but given up hope as it was a long time ago & before the pandemic kicked in. They’ve been in touch recently though to ask if I’m still interested in the position, so I’m now kinda expecting something to follow.

Sat the test for a trainee driver a few years back & passed the first part before failing at the interview, so not sure what I’ve done that’s still relevant if any.

However, can someone give me as much info as possible on what I’d actually be doing in the job?

It sounds like you might be a yard or depot driver. You'd be driving units at no faster than 5mph in a yard environment for the purposes of maintenance, cleaning or marshalling in preparation for service. Expect a lot of night shifts.

Did it state a location?

If you have aspirations to be a mainline driver then it will be a good grounding for you I'd imagine. Get chatting to the mainline drivers and maybe even get to know a Driver Team Manager if you can, they may tell you when opportunities come up. Would be even better if you are based somewhere that has a mainline driver depot (ie. Yoker, Corkerhill).

yeah I already had the basic understanding of the role, but wasn’t sure of the wider duties. Good to know it’s a 5mph speed limit right enough. Learn something new there. Got a few mates that are mainland drivers & others that work elsewhere in the company so will def tap them up for advice.

I’ve to go for an assessment for the Shunters job now, & on the same day I found that out, I got asked if I’m still interested in the trainee drivers role, so I’m thinking I’ll be invited for an assessment or interview (if my previous assessment is still valid), for that job.

I’m still holding out hope that’s the case because that’d be my preferred role. Long way to go in both jobs though.

Can anyone remember what the salary is for the Shunters job? Been that long since I applied that it’s gone out my head.

With the lastest pay rise, pay levels are as follows:-

Trainee train driver £29,903
New driver £41,567
New driver after 6 months £44,394
New driver after 9 months £47,697
Driver £52,633

Depot driver year 1 £31,635
Depot driver year 2 £32,360.

These figures exclude Sunday working.

I think the grades differ between depots. At Haymarket, Eastfield and I believe Cadder the Shunters are Traincare grade B3.3 and the salary is now £39987, they are classed as Shunters/drivers. At Corkerhill they only shunt and mainline drivers move the trains, I can’t remember the grade but it’s definitely less money.

The job I’m in for is B3.3 & I did think it was around the £38k mark at the time of applying. Obviously been a few pay increases since then, so you must be right.

Sat my assessment for it yesterday & it was quite tough so not holding out much hope, but you never know.
