Hi I have just applied for a shunter job. The thing I would like to know is as a non internal applicant what are my chances? I currently work for a waste management company as a charge hand and safety res. My job roles are as follows: mobile and fixed plant operatations, traffic controller, mobile and fixed plant daily checks defect reporting general maintainence, quality control, van driver, drivers mate and general cleaning of yards. My job isn't "safety critical" however my companies health and safety standards are very high indeed as it is a very dangerous job if SOP's are not followed correctly. I have 5 A-Cs in GCSE which include maths and science but not English (I would be willing to re-sit it if needed.)
Thanks in advance for any responses particularly any from depot managers.

Don't know who you have applied for but as far as I can make out, the majority of shunters where I am have come from from the outside so I'd say your chances are as good as anyone elses.

Your current job sounds like you can demonstrate a lot of the criteria required and I wouldn't worry about not having an A-C in English.

Thanks for the response.
My application is with First Great Western, just hoping I haven't flunked the aptitude test they ask you to sit immediately after the application is completed. I have a feeling if I did then my application will be sifted out. Time to play the waiting game I suppose, I also suspect I would be extremely lucky to get it on a first attempt.
