Hello,

I was wondering if someone would be able to give me some advice.
I currently work at first great western and a job has opened up for a shunter!
Would anyone be able to give me any advice on going for this position and where I can download a shunter rule book?

Why don't you ask your team leader? All the sections of the rule book relevant to shunting should be made available to you. Speak to the shunters who are already in the post, they should keep you right with any info you need.

I agree but sadly my team leader is not like that. It's like getting blood out of a stone :/

You can find the rulebook online. Look for module SS1 (Shunting) which is the most relevant. You can also look at modules G1 (General Safety), All the Signalling Modules, and the Train Working modules.

Going any more in depth than this would probably be pointless at this stage.

Do Not try and learn the Rules by yourself. The selection process will look for the ability to b trained, not for you to think that you know the Rules already. Start quoting the Rules, and you will just get yourself in a tangle.

Try contacting the management at the relevant depot. There's probably a number on the advert?
Most would rather a candidate asked relevant questions at this stage, rather than waste time interviewing/ selecting someone who subsequently decides the role isn't for them.

Luckily I already work at the depot that the job is at and have spoken to the depot manager about it
Just don't want to look silly if I get an interview and not know anything
