Shunter Driver

Does a shunter driver have to take the same assessments as a trainee train driver? Also what hours do they do? Is it a good way of progressing on to mainline driving?

Depends on the location, company and whether you are working on Network Rail infrastructure I'd imagine. If the job involves taking a unit from the depot to the station for example then I'd say yes you will need full drivers assessment.

I'm a shunter driver for a freight company and never needed to take the assessments I only work in non NR yards.

The position is for Southern at their Battersea depot, think you have to take the unit down to Victoria, so it would be on the mainline, so I would need to take assessments as a trainee would. Is it a good way of progressing to train driver or do the tocs tend to hold you back?
