Shunter and Depot driver

Do these job titles refer to the same role, or is there any difference?
Does anybody know what is shunter's salary? (FGW - Oxford if known).
Help much appreciated.

Shunter would imply to me pulling the points and talking the driver through moves primarily to me without driving duties.
Depot driver then would be someone who actually drives in depot confines possibly with shunting duties also.

Shunter is then equivalent of our banksman, someone who only assists during maneuvering.

The shunter is involved in coupling/uncoupling applying hand brakes marshalling wagons together to make a train up doing a brake test before departing and checking the overall condition of wagons(tapping).This is with a freight company not passenger work.

A "proper" Depot Driver (like myself) does both driving and the shunting at the same time and is therefore on the ground just as much as in the seat.

I see where you are coming from Bev but as I said I was talking freight and also not many would just sit and not help the shunter,after all they both want to go home asap so it helps if you help out.

Indeed and I know of one railway where the role of both is actually called simply 'Shunter'.

So the actual job description will tell if driving is involved.
If so, selection process should be similar to train driver's and the training.

I actually didn't have to sit drivers assessments and I drive within depot/yard confines. Did sit a drivers medical though. Driver training was on the job.
