Shunt driver to driver

My first post on here.
Hi, some much appreciated advice please.
Would it be in my benefit to become a shunt driver before applying for trainee driver ?

Might depend on which TOC on how beneficial it would be. Also I read for example EMT only take on trainee depot/shunter drivers then convert to mainline after that.

But by no means is it the only/best way. Just keep a lookout for any driver vacancy that comes up and go for it I’d say.

You may benefit with a slight head-start on a course as, if and when you go onto the mainline, especially if the TOC operates with the same tractions as the one you were shunting with.
