shrewsbury-birmingham NS

I'm travelling on the last service from
Machynlleth to birmingham tonight. With engineering works from shrewsbury, I was planning to get the rail replacement bus arriving 2350.

However a member of staff has advised that we should stay on the train to crewe and change there. Unless I'm mistaken, there are no journey opportunities from shrewsbury at 21.25 ish to birmingham via crewe? We arrive at crewe at 2201, just as the virgin train arrives/leaves. I guess no chance for this being held!

What would you advise?

The WTT has you arriving into Crewe platform 7 at 2201 (Crewe South Junction 2200), with RTT (clicky) predicting that you'll be a minute early.

The Virgin train (clicky) is timed to depart from platform 6 (a cross platform interchange) at 2201 and a half, having dwelled for three minutes.

I know nothing about the area, but I would be rather tempted to try to make this connection, if at around the Severn, realtimetrains was showing nothing untoward

I would advise AGAINST travelling via Crewe since as you quite rightly say the very last Crewe - Birmingham train (of all TOCs) departs Crewe @ 2201. The bus from Shrewsbury at 2135 is the best (and quite possibly very last connecting) option.

The ATW and Virgin look like a clash to me, therefore the ATW will get held and the Virgin will go infront. I wouldn't suggest going to Crewe if it were me....

Thanks for your comments, Its not worth the risk going to crewe. At least this TM was giving the right advise of getting the bus.

You made the right choice - the train from Machynlleth didn't pick up any time between Shrewsbury and Crewe, arriving 8 minutes late. The train to Birmingham left bang on time - you wouldn't have made it

Sorry for trying to strand you in Crewe :P

No worries, we nearly missed the rail replacment bus! It was just leaving the car park, when I told the atw bus dispatcher that our train had been delayed and there were still more passengers coming. Hence I jumped on and we made a quick loop around shrewsbury to pick up other passengers before going straight to birmingham. Sent an e-mail to customer services, surely it would make sense to check the timing of the connecting service and ensure all your customers catch the bus! Otherwise its a large taxi bill for atw!

1 minute gap wasnt there between arrival and departure of the two trains? and doesnt 6 and 7 require the same line south of the station?
