It does seem awkward. But it's been done before - the old TransPennine DMUs had a gangway at one end and a full width cab at the other.
It's not really much different to the principle of planning Intercity services so that First Class is always at the London end - until you try to do it on a network like Northern's where there's all sorts of ways for trains to end up being turned and where set swaps are necessarily routine!

I recall it was a headache at Bounds Green if an IC225 set came in the wrong way. e.g. all the sanding buckets and watering points were in the wrong place.

No, there were two fleets - class 123 was through gangwayed (and originally based on the western region) and class 124 was full width cab, although it sounds like some hybrids were formed towards the end of their lives.

Scottish class 126 had gangwayed cabs at one end, as did Northern Ireland class 80 and 450.

The Class 126 is what inspired me to ask about doing the same with the Class 150s.

I didn't know the NIR trains above had the same though.
