Should Flying Scotsman be scrapped?

Likely to be a very contentious topic this. What do you think? Is it worth preserving and/or running on the mainline? Or do you think it is not worth the money and constant trespassers and should instead be confined to the lovely fields of Rotherham?

Just thought it would be an interesting question to ask.

Should take tougher action on the trespassers.

I've never quite got why Joe Public get quite *that* excited by Flying Scotsman in the way they do. You know, you'd think a loco like Mallard (admittedly not run on the main line for many years) would get people similarly excited, but they don't seem to...?

If it's owned by the NRM surely they'd just make it a static exhibit if/when it is no longer serviceable?

It is a valuable historic relic - the first UK loco confirmed to have reached 100 mph - and should never be scrapped.
That does not mean it should for all time be allowed on "the national network" - that option may eventually become far too expensive - after which it might "retire" to a heritage line, then a suitable museum where it can safely be conserved.

Scrapped? Definitely not - retired from the mainline, quite possibly.

Considering the amount of money spent on it and it's fame and history, it would be criminal to scrap it, but I think within a decade it will be 'plinthed' in the NRM

At the end of 10 years it needs another expensive overhaul or 'plinthing' - same with all steam locomotives. You would imagine that there will be a period of plinthing before it is next overhauled.

given the total absence of project management or cost control during the most recent rebuild, any attempt at spending more money on it should be refused until the NRM actually prove they are competent to manage the work and costs.
The cost overruns and managerial incompetence were a disgrace.
