Shortest scheduled service

Isn't this thread about shortest end to end services, not shortest services between Stations which should go in the closest Stations thread?

Think Stourbridge Town to Stourbridge Junction is the winner, but others are Liverpool Central-Kirkby about 7 miles & 7 Stations, & North Bromely-Grove Park

The Bromley Popper was what I was thinking, that can only be a mile and half for the 3 stations....

Are we talking the distance the train travels, or the way the crow would do the route?

Whilst there are some obvious routes which have been suggested (Stourbridge etc), how about a different slant on things - the ATW "Valley Line" service from
Radyr - Coryton - must be only a couple of miles between the two (though obviously longer via Cardiff Central!)...

Honourable mention to the 05something Wrexham General–Wrexham Central, which is there because the train stables at General overnight rather than Central.

49 chains, shorter than the 62 chains between the Stourbridge stations. Does it still operate?

Mondays to Saturdays. Departs General 0710, arrives Central 0713. Forms the 0728 to Bidston.

Definitely shorter than the Stourbridge service. Got to be the winner.

And they are scheduled to/from Paddington. Yes it may appear on some local timetables without reference to Paddington, but that doesn't stop it being a through train.

Indeed, 2A85 is Frome–Westbury only booked for an HST. But at 5¾ miles it's nowhere near as short as the Wrexham General–Wrexham Central 2J00 which is only 49 chains (or under 1000 metres).

And as I pointed it out, I win.

it always amuses me when they advertise a 'partial closure' on the Waterloo and City Line!

but, it's certainly longer than the Stourbridge and Wrexham services.

Correct whilst some HSTs run through Frome there is a Frome to Westbury HST that then runs ECS to the Marsh anyway.

There is or was a couple of services that ran from Frome - Westbury early morning/late at night. The ECS turn for one of the mornings used to be funny, Left Westbury for Heywood Road Junction, change ends then ran over the Westbury avoider to Fairwood then over to Frome!

Radyr - Coryton is close to each other, how easy is it to get between the two? Looked at google maps once and there is an annoying river between the two and the bridge to get across looked like it was miles to the north! Looked like to walk it might have taken the same time as the train does

Whilst we are on shortest schedules, any short ECS turns that could win this too? There is a lot of yards/depots to stations that are short, so maybe shortest ECS between stations? Westbury to Frome or to Warminster is one...any others that could be shorter?

Not sure of the mileage, but how about Heathrow Central to T4 and Reigate - Redhill?

Doesn't the Connect service shuttle to and from T4 from Central every other quarter hour?

I think there are still some rush hour Reigate-Redhill shuttles, although most split/join Tonbridge services at Redhill.

For some reason I thought there was still a summer service from Ryde Pier Head terminating at Ryde Esplanade station (and vice-versa). Looks like I'm way out of date.

This service was introduced when the Pier trams went, when I last visited track still in situ but disused.

Lymington branch must be a contender, and at one time there was a shuttle service from Bodmin General station to a new platform at Boscarne to link with the exGW line from Bodmin General to Wadebridge and Padstow. This operated from 1964 to 1966 and mileages given as Boscarne Exchange platform 5m 14ch and Bodmin North Station 6m 68ch - tot 1m 54ch, and there was an intermediate station - well halt - at Dunmere 5m 20ch so does this contend with closest station as well, also another Smallbrook Jcn (unique station thread) as there was no means of access, its only purpose was to allow passengers to transfer between trains?

Got to agree with Eagle that the shortest service has got to be the 0710 Wrexham General - Wrexham Central 0713 which is a 150 scheduled service and is only 49 chains and is one of my locals
HOWEVER Eagle it isn't stabled in General, it comes in on 2J06 (0610 Shrewsbury - Wrexham General) then shunts up to the signal and transfers over to the Bidston line!

There's still a few CST > LBG and LBG > CST workings, but at 56 chains it's slightly longer than WRX > WXC.

Redhill - Reigate is 1m67ch so no competition there.
