Cross country services to Guildford certainly ran in the early / mid 80s; I can remember my Dad taking me out for a walk, to a nearby footpath crossing on the Guildford - Reading line mid evening one summer, conveniently just as a 47 + coaches came through at a rate of knots. I think it was a Leeds - Portsmouth, but could be wrong.

BSK-IPS trains called West hampstead for the tube also.

Interesting stuff. I pretty much missed out the Portsmouth line services in favour of mentioning the route via Gatwick, which is a bit of an oversight, but certainly of more historical rather than modern-day relevance, given that XC services still nonchalantly pop into Guildford every now and then - as if to just make sure it might still be there if need be... ;)
