AFAIK the Class 66 wrecked at Great Heck was only a few months old when the accident happened, are there any locos/trains that got an even shorter career before they were wrecked/retired? I think one or two Class 37s got very short careers too?

Sorry I couldn't resist!
D6983 was the first 37 to be scrapped some 7 months after acceptance following a collision near Bridgend

According to this link, 66521 was only a little over two months old when it was wrecked at Great Heck, so I guess it may well be the record holder (of the locos that actually entered service)...

Not what the OP had in mind, I'm sure, but the opening day on the Snowdon Mountain Railway involved a derailment that wrote off its loco on its first train. Loco was 'Ladas', date 6th April 1896. Never managed a complete round trip.

No 46202 Princess Anne was officially a 1952 rebuild of the ex-LMS "Turbomotive", but much of it (in particular the frames and cylinders) was brand new. It was wrecked beyond repair in the Harrow crash after just two months.

Googling ‘new train wrecked’ showed some even more interestingness. A train derailed carrying brand new Boeing fuselages, which careened down into a fiver (in USA) and another carrying 100’s of Jeep and GM and Chevrolet 4x4’s.. All wrecked!

Great Eastern Railway 1506 (LNER B12 4-6-0) had a service life of less than 7 months, being turned out in February 1913 and written off in a collision in July that year.

Surprised no one mentioned Class 89. Yes some specific locos due to when they entered service vs when they were taken out might be shorter timeframe wise, but considering this particular loco; I guess the running costs were too dire to let it run regularly amongst the Intercity 225s and Intercity 125s, hence why it’s had a number of restorations, I wonder if LSL could pluck it up and keep it amongst the ‘Intercity’ liveried locos they now have.

It kind of reminded me of an HST power car with the way the yellow roof appeared as well as the centralised drivers’ window.

IN service in GB ?

BREL International coach set ?

About 10 days IIRC actually IN SERVICE IN GB, so excludes testing and excludes subsequent export to IE.

To be fair despite being a one-off, the privatised railway brought it back into service for a good few years before another catastrophic failure.

It's now nearing the end of a long restoration project.

One of the driving cars of 317301 was written off in a shunting accident before even entering service!

Careered into a river, perhaps? I wonder if a Boeing forum somewhere has this incident in one of its threads, mentioning a new loco in the post?!
