Short run seat reservation

This caught my attention the other day, so I pinched it to scan.



I can only assume it was for the final leg of a run from, say, Euston.

I've had quite a few similarly odd itineraries in the opposite direction - caused by trains terminating at Manchester Piccadilly (MAN) that have a lot of padding between Oxford Road (MCO) and MAN, so that (according to the public timetable) they are 'overtaken' by the following service.

Such as:

1H96 ATW Llandudno-MAN
dep MCO p4 21:49
arr MAN p13 21:57

1U81 TPE Blackpool Nth - Manchester Airport
dep MCO p4 21:54
arr MAN p13 21:56

I've had Advance tickets which have told me that I need to change at MCO onto the 'faster' train. Although quite how the second train manages to get past the first one...

I'm often generating Reading-Paddington reservations which go unused, as booking engines either generate reservations for all reservable services, or none. If I'm at the booking office I just ask for the trains I actually want seats on.

A funny reservation coupon I saw recently:

London Paddi -

0730 PAD-BRI

... on the 0736 PAD-CNM train!

I always get reservations for a number of reasons. I've had Liverpool South Parkway to Lime street, Chester-Crewe, Stockport-Manchester, Oxford Road-Piccadilly to name but a few!

I've had Llandudno Junction - Conwy, Hunts Cross - Liverpool South Pk (on EMT), Deansgate - Oxford Road, Deansgate - Salford Crescent and Manchester Picc - Mauldeth Road before.

The only reason I could think of anyone getting reservations for such journeys is to be spiteful and to stop someone else getting a seat for a much longer journey. (of course excluding compulsory reservations for advance tickets).

That's not one of the reasons. There is nothing stopping me (or anyone) getting reservations for short journeys.

That's one of the problems where journey planners produce what anyone who knows how the railway works can see is wrong.

An inverse effect also happens at Oxford Road. All the stoppers via Warrington Central are followed by an express to Piccadilly and points east, which provides a slick and reliable onward connection. But because it's under five minutes the journey planners won't find it.

That happens at Aldershot. Train to Farnham arrives less than 5 minutes after the Ascot train leaves. Same island too. Only train delays would change things.

Far easier then an official 5 minute connection at East Croydon during peak rush hour. Still if it's official, that's what counts.
