Short faring - could I be prosecuted?

Hi all,

Firstly owning up that what I did was totally wrong and have not done this for over almost two years.

I previously did short faring on 7 occasions (I’ve went back and counted). I was never caught and have no plan to ever do it again.

Should I be worried about prosecution? This forum has me very spooked if I am honest!

I would think that it is unlikely, unless you come to the railway's attention now, that anyone will look at your past travel record. Furthermore seven incidents seems likely to be insufficient to trigger any warnings if data scrapping is conducted. Finally, if you weren't caught at the time l struggle to see how the railway will even know that you short-fared. Doughnutting with both tickets bought online could be a whole different thing though.

They were bought via Trainline - I use a different Trainline account now (not deliberately I just got a new phone and couldn’t remember my password).

I have never done it since and regularly travel so there is no chance I’ll be caught again. I was just worried they’d do some retrospective look

Just to check what Wolfie asked it was short faring - having a ticket that didn't cover the whole journey (short faring) as opposed to having two tickets one at the start and one at the end to open barriers/pass gatelines (doughnutting - because there's a gap in the middle)?

Oh sorry I assumed they were the same thing. It was doughnutting then!

Trainline do offer a password reset facility

(Using separate accounts often doesn't fool companies; for example, LNER settled out of court with people who had created multiple LNER accounts for the purpose of receiving multiple 'Perks' discounts)

They do indeed do data analysis to look for suspicious behaviour, but given what you've said, I think if you don't do it again, it's unlikely anything would come of it. If it does, you can seek advice at that time.
