Short fare

Hello,

I have received an the email from email from SWR and allegation regarding short fares between Vauxhall and Waterloo (i was stopped in person and handed my details over). I'm at the stage where I have repsonded to the email and now have to fill out the spreadsheet email. I accept that on 14 occasions I travelled from Barnes but only paid for a Vauxhall–Waterloo ticket, and I intend to admit those incidents when completing the spreadsheet provided.

However, the train operator has also questioned approximately 40 other journeys dating back to 2022. As far as I am aware, these journeys were valid. In many cases there were no ticket barriers in operation, the barriers were left open, or I presented my ticket to a member of staff who permitted me to pass through.

My concern is how best to respond to these older journeys given the passage of time. I cannot realistically remember the specific circumstances of each individual journey from several years ago.
When compeleting the spreadsheet Would it be better to enter in the comments section:

1. Explain that, to the best of my knowledge, the journeys were valid and would have involved either open barriers, or permission from staff after presenting my ticket; or
2. Simply state the barrier was open for that journey Or the warden let me through even though I cannot exaclty remeber but I know its one or the other.

I would be grateful for any advice from those who have dealt with similar cases.

I think in the circumstances you can just go for option 1, but if you have any evidence substantiating the actual journeys taken this will help.

Do your best to convince them. Justify your travelling between the locations by stating addresses of properties or workplaces. Don't lie to them. If you're not sure, then just say so. Hopefully they will be reasonable and remove journeys where it seems you had a valid ticket.
