Hello, I’m looking for some advice.
In May I was caught for having bought a short ticket. I got on at Kentish Town to travel to Three Bridges but only bought a ticket from East Croydon. I know this was wrong. I have just received the letter of intent to prosecutor. I have read the threads on here and can see it’s best to admit you were wrong and say you will pay any fees. I have drafted a response and was hoping for guidance on if the tone is right, and also if I need to state where the journey actually started from? Also they ask you to explain what happened, I have not really done this other than to say I was travelling without a valid ticket, is this enough or do I need to go into detail? Thanks in advance!!

Drafted response:
Dear Prosecutions Department,

I am writing in response to your letter about the incident that took place on 16 May 2025 at Gatwick Airport Station.

I would like to sincerely apologise for travelling without the correct ticket on that occasion. I understand that it is my responsibility to ensure I have a valid ticket before travelling, and I deeply regret not doing so.

I appreciate the seriousness of this matter and am genuinely sorry for any inconvenience caused to your staff and the company. I take full responsibility for my actions and am very remorseful about the situation.

I would be very grateful if you would consider allowing me to resolve this matter directly with Govia Thameslink Railway rather than through court proceedings. I will pay the outstanding fare, together with any reasonable administrative or penalty costs required to settle the matter.

Once again, I am truly sorry for my actions and any disruption they caused. I take full responsibility and hope you can see that I am very remorseful and committed to making things right.

Thank you for taking the time to consider my response.

Yours sincerely,

Generally OK I think.

I don’t like “reasonable” because you don’t have a choice and you can’t impose conditions - they will settle for an amount and you can take it or leave it and go to court instead.
