What an excellent production just watching it now. I didn't think I'd like the contemporary version but have been proved incorrect.

Compares very favourably with the recent Cinematic release with Downey Jr and Law which I also saw.

I can see why Doctor Who has gone down the pan the scriptwriters have moved onto this.:p

Yeah, I watched Sherlock Series 1 a few months ago and I liked it MUCH more than I expected to! Really well made. Well done to the producers! - they would probably check www.railforums.co.uk regularly, wouldn't they?!

A very good program indeed. It's an excellent contemporary interpretation of Conan Doyle's work - and very funny as well!

Well I must get in here by saying Jeremy Brett is the definitive SH. All this trendiness for young actors to take on these roles nowadays rely more on the fancy productions rather than their particular acting skills - the acting version of the x factor I think.

Basil Rathbone is the definitive SH - may be before your time :p

I wasn't sure about this when I sat down to watch the second episode of the first series, but it had come highly recommended. I really enjoyed it, and it looks like the next 3 episodes are going to be very enjoyable.

Not one for the 'purists' I'm sure, but if you're going to modernise something I think this is the way to do it.

For the "definative" Sherlock Holmes it would have to be Jeremy Brett for me as well. Though I have been enjoying the new contemporary version as well.

I can only sum up this version of Sherlock in 7 words.

Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, brilliant, brilliant brilliant and brilliant.

The only show in the last few years where I have been glued to the TV.

I wasn't massively keen on the first series, it was good, but not super good, howver I was really impressed by last nights episode, it had a lot of action, fast paced, decent acting, best thing I've seen since True Blood series 3 finished on C4 :)

Whilst not keen on any of this Sherlock as I stated earlier but if we are talking about engaging TV then The Killing II certainly fits that role for me.

I'm sure that Jeremy Brett will remain the definitive Sherlock Homes in the purest sense. However I enjoyed the first series of Sherlock, but in a different way to the original stories. I didn;t think that I would, as I don;t normalyl enjoy the updated versions of classic stories, but I was surprisingly impressed.

I think there is room for this series as it has sharp scripts, a quirkiness and a sense of humour. I feel it is quite close to what Conan Doyle might have written if he had been living now.

Have you never seen Basil Rathbone in the role - I can't see where all this Jeremy Brett nonsense is coming from :p

I have, I used to watch those films a lot when I was a kid and they seemed to be on every Christmas! Basil was brilliant, but I thought Brett was better.

Hmm, perhaps a little too much alliteration there!

Sherlock Holmes isn't meant to be about the action (which is why the films, while very good and great to watch, don't push my SH button). The TV series has the right balance of action to riddles, and the riddles are good and well thought out. Plus the fact that anything and everything that happens is relevant, even tiny things you might have forgot about at the start of the episode.

Young actors? Robert Dewney Junior is 46, Benedict Cumberbatch younger but still 35.

Rathbone was 45 in Hound of the Baskervilles.

I didn't see the first series of the current TV adaption and sat down to the latest episode expecting not to like it. Instead I was absolutely blown away by it!

In terms of the definitive Holmes, Rathbone was great, Brett was even better.

Basil Rathbone played Sherlock Holmes 14 times on the Big Screen....how many actors have played Holmes,Sir Guy of Gisbourne (Flynns Robin Hood) and won the Military Cross during WW1:p

Brett was still the ultimate SH for me, until Cumberbatch picked up the deerstalker hat in the Scandal in Belgravia episode. The final touch!

I just heard that Sherlock's Benedict Cumberbatch has nabbed a part in the Star Trek sequel and will be playing Smaug in the Hobbit seems like it he's making an impact in hollywood.
