There is a Super Off-Peak ticket for this route which costs £16.50, route ANY PERMITTED, with restriction code LH. As far as I can tell this ticket shouldn't have any restriction on which operator you use to make the journey, though usually you would travel with London Midland, who price this ticket.
I want to travel via Birmingham New Street and then up to Warrington with Virgin, changing trains there for the final leg to Liverpool. This is a permitted route using maps BP+LC+ML. Despite this I am unable to make NRE accept this as a valid route for this fare. I can make it show the correct itinerary from making the via point Warrington: for example this Saturday the 06:29 from Shenton to Birmingham arriving at 07:00 with LM, the 07:20 from Birmingham to Warrington BQ arriving at 08:26 with Virgin, and finally the 08:57 from Warrington Central towards Liverpool with EMT, but NRE refuses to show the £16.50 fare, or equivalent £16.40 Super off-peak single.
The restriction on BRfares don't mention anything about operator, but if you select the fare on London Midland's site it says "Train operator: London Midland or Chiltern Railways dependent on Route description". I'm not sure how binding this sentence is meant to be.
Also LM's WebTIS site does let some journeys through on this fare (that involve Virgin) but only on relatively convoluted routes, and never from taking a Virgin train from Birmingham. An example can be seen if you input SEN-LIV via WAC at 8:36 on a saturday. Thetrainline powered sites claim that no fares exist via Warrington at all.
...so am I missing something? Is there a restriction for this fare that I am missing, meaning that you can't take a Virgin train from Birmingham to Warrington? Fare check rule or something? I never did quite understand that.
