Just seen the attached on Facebook, looks like the shenfield shark brake van is finally on the move. Wish I'd got some pics of it now. Probably off to scrap yard unless someone preserves it?

If you're a member of the GBRf appreciation society Facebook group you should be able to access it at
The link won't work if you're not in the private group.

I've attached a pic, it's definately shenfield I've seen loads of pictures of it in the past...

5.5 minutes to cover the 6 miles from Shenfield to Gidea Park Jn should see the shark explode quite spectacularly, and it is a class 0 schedule. Are they just fitting a wheel skate for a later move? Last known the shark belonged to DB, are GBRf stealing it? ;)

Loco is there for 8 or so hours, so my guess is they're moving it around the siding into a position where it can be removed with a crane?
If it were to be moved to Ilford or wherever, it would be done under a class 8 headcode I would have thought

Would need an overhead isolation of platform 1 if a crane were to be involved. Any attempt to move it could see it crumble to dust. Last time it had a skate put under it the plan was to use a tamper to haul it to Romford engineers yard in the dead of night.

If going by rail, surely it needs to be removed under possession? The thing is a risk to move in traffic due to the bits that are likely to fall off it!

Think you’ll find it will still be there.... The 66 is the thunderbird for the 720 testing.

The proverbial fake news then. That makes far more sense, title needs to be changed to Shenfield Shark Not On The Move.

One of mine is responsible for it being there in the first place! Perhaps we should convert it to a hotel.

I hope he’s proud about it. I remember being there with a ‘high up’ about 15 years ago, and promising him faithfully it was going to be removed soon. He left before it did, fortunately.

Why is it there?

Short version of the story is that it was detached early one Monday morning from a ballast train that had been working in a possession on the Southend branch, having failed with an axle bearing problem. That’s why any movement now requires a wheel skate, and lots of crossed fingers.

It must be rusted to the rails now.
