Just watching Sheffield Wednesday V Leeds on TV and noticed the electronic pitchside adverts for East Midlands Trains promoting Sheffield to London returns FROM £63 off-peak.
Hardly an eye-catching lead in price!
How does this compare with similar length journeys in mileage terms on other routes to London at off-peak times?
Not too long ago you could buy single fares for £6 with Midland Mainline

Significantly cheaper than Leeds, cheaper than Manchester or Doncaster except by HT.
More to the point, it seems to be a promotional fare, £15 less than normal.

Normally £78 for s.Off peak return, so its a promotion fare, it's £48 return, if you don't mind travelling via Tamworth though. E.M trains are quite pricey these days, on the London route.

I still find EMT very good value for Advance fares, booked well in advance, at off peak times especially midweek in First Class. Unfortunately these days these cheap fares are only available on a small number of trains between approx 11 am and 2 pm, yet a few years ago they they were available from approx 10 am until at least 3 pm. This is not much use if wanting to travel to London and back in one day but very useful if you are staying in a hotel when checking in early afternoon and checking out late morning.

If returning the same day it can be £43 via Tamworth:
£13 Derbyshire Wayfarer between Sheffield and Burton
£30 super off peak Burton-Euston LNR and XC only.

The Wayfarer can be even better value if more than one person travel together.

On EMT, Megatrain has advances to London at times including around 7.30am and 7.30pm, and back at around 7.30am.
To find the last available date, an easy way is to put in Chesterfield-London and look at the drop-down calendar. Chesterfield is only served by the train, whereas the Sheffield calendar shows dates further ahead which only relate to buses.

I think most of you are missing the the £63 'return' refers to advance tickets

In that case the alternatives would seem more useful than if those were off-peak returns. Even for a couple of days' time (Monday and Tuesday), Megatrain has advance singles for around £23-£26, with one at £16.

Ooh, the Derbyshire warefarer will be useful for me, Chesterfield-Tamworth is one of the few rail journeys I make outside of my commute.

The £63 you mean? That was on advertising hordings at a football match, not online, so there won't be a link, and if you mean the MML £6 that is probably not available any more.
