Sheffield supertram extension to rotherham

While passing meadowhall south i saw lots of work men doing surveying at the site where the proposed junction will be for a new line to rotheram

made me wonder, what stage is the planning for tram train trials at along this route, havent heard anything for a while?

I believe what you have seen, may be the preparatory works of phase two of the tram-train trial, as outlined on this web page. However I have not heard anything official to verify this, so it may just be a coincidence.

The original plan for the tram trains to run on the Penistone line was abandoned in favour of this. IIRC SYPTE are also funding two quality bus corridors between Sheffield and Rotherham so could be a case of wasted money when the tram line opens.
