Sheffield Night Buses

Do any exsist or run near to Meadowhall? I have a Megabus to catch from there at 0140 on Saturday Morning.

There aren't many night buses in Sheffield, unusually for such a large city, and none of them go in Meadowhall direction. The last tram (from the city centre) arrives at Meadowhall Interchange at 00.03, or a taxi from town to the Interchange shouldn't be more than about £10.

That may explain why (when I've caught overnight megabuses) I see few boarders at Meadowhall.

Also, the Travel South Yorkshire website says that the Interchange closes at midnight, so you might have to wait outside for the coach. Megabus usually use stop A2 which is just outside the passenger lounge.

They is no night buses in Sheffield any more.

Stagecoach withdrew all the services a couple of months back since no one was using them, but then if people dont know they exist how can they use them.

Nottingham. Loads of them. The first of them started the September after I finished at the University there (1996) (followed shortly afterwards by NCT's general finishing time for day buses becoming 0000 instead of 2300).

NCT now have 12 night routes.

Trentbarton's indigo is very unusual outside of London running every night of the week with a longest gap on the Nottingham - Long Eaton section of half an hour.

The Beeston area where I used to live is covered by the N34, N36, Y36 and indigo giving 8 buses an hour on a Friday or Saturday night.

Bristol does seem to have a good night bus network no and at least 1 route which runs 24 hours which does seem to be doing well for itself.

Cardiff had a nightbus network which was withdrawn because of lack of use and high costs, although it should be noted that the company was employing security gaurds at the time.

One problem does tend to be the limit promotion of nightbus services, I suppose the saying is if people know they are there they will use it as is the case in Bristol.

In swansea I recon you could run a limit nightbus service to Oystermouth, Sketty, Blaen-Y-Maes and Morriston

It depends what you call 'decent'. I'm not particularly interested in going home from a city centre at 0100, I'm more likely to want a bus at 0300 to get to the station or airport for an early start.

Edinburgh has long had a comprehensive network of 24 hour routes, 7 days a week.

Greater Manchester has one genuine 24 hour route (the 43 between the city centre and the airport). There are numerous other night buses in GM, focussed on the city centre and Wigan. Most major corridors out of the city centre are served. Most of them only operate Friday and Saturday night. However, East Didsbury is served every night (as well as the 43 mentioned above). The 192 runs Thursday, Friday and Saturday night.

Bizarrely, though, Birmingham had no night buses until a few days ago when the 97 route went 24 hours, which means that the airport now has a 24 hour bus connection.

Nottingham has two, N4 to Clifton (doesn't run Sunday night) & Indigo to Long Eaton. The others only run Friday & Saturday. They used to be 4 which ran all week but they were scrapped as noone (apart from me) used them

actually, make that 3, I forgot Skylink to the airport. Leicester and Derby also have their own 24 hour skylink buses to Nottingam East Midlands Airport

Oxford has a reasonably decent night-bus network, mostly run by Oxford Bus Co, with Stagecoach running night buses (till midnight-1am in the week, but until 3am or later on Friday and Saturday night) on some longer distance routes out of the city, to places like Abingdon & Wantage, or Witney & Carterton.

Brighton & Hove run the N7 and N25 services every night; N12 and N14 from Monday to Saturday; N1, N2, N5, N29, and the N40 every Thursday, Friday and Saturday Nights under the "Nightclub" branding. They're generally well-used particularly at weekends, though I could see potential for the N40 to extend to Three Bridges for First Capital Connect overnight services. Even if it would throw everything totally out of any logical balance.

Metrobus gave this a go with the N73, it was only through trying to find the timetable for this thread that I've discovered they've axed it!

Said operator does still operate a 24 route in Crawley, the Fastway 10, and a couple of routes run 0300-2400 to link the town and the surrounding areas to the 24/7 concern that is Gatwick Airport. Over in Essex Arriva run the 510 hourly through the night between Harlow and Stansted - do they run any other night routes anywhere else in the country? (outside London)

The Arriva 280 from Oxford to Aylesbury runs hourly until a 0215 departure from Oxford (arrives at Aylesbury 0321) on Friday and Saturday nights.

If you go to stand D2 their is a yellow infomation button, press that and the control room will open up the passgenger area so that you can keep warm and use the toliet if needed.

Spurious would be more appropriate. One every night short cross river route, a few weekend cross river services and a one night a week service to Widnes.
Like many cities, people going out for the evening or those with early flights or trains find it more convenient, reliable and often if there two or more. cheaper to use cabs. Who wants to hang about working out where and when there is a nightbus when you just jump in a cab door to door ? Who wants to cart luggage to the nearest bus stop when going to the airport ?

One every night short cross river route

That's a tendered service run by Ace Travel during the week, and commercially by Arriva at the weekends when it extends to New Brighton. At least it runs through the whole night, unlike most night buses.

Who wants to cart luggage to the nearest bus stop when going to the airport ?

Airport night buses are principally used by staff who need to get there for early/late shifts. Obviously most passengers drive or get taxis for early flights as the night bus would only be of use if they happen to live along that particular route, or (unlikely) a connecting night bus service.

On the Isle of Wight, to the best of my knowledge the number 1 bus from Newport to Cowes, the number 3 bus from Newport to Ryde via Ventnor and Shanklin, and the number 9 bus from Newport to Ryde via Wootton used to run 24 hours a day until a couple of years ago. All of these routes have now been downgraded to a nightbus service on Fridays and Saturdays only.

There is wigan night bus have change the date last week on TFGM erm...the route for night bus is 628(kitt Green), 629(Castle Hill), 631(Highfield Grange) is will cease on 28 of July....Other 5 will stay is 632(Highfield Grange), 600(Golborne), 598(Leigh), 635(Almond Brook) and 695(Before Skelmersdale) on 2nd of august. They are only stagecoach wigan.

That's very good, offering an all night service in what used to be traditionally bad bus territory. Surely this must be tendered?

it may well be. I don't think it's been running for much over a year. Used it for the first time last Sunday morning, no more than 5 customers in total between Wolverton & Bletchley. Odd thing is that there is very little open in MK after 11pm, theres a pub in Wolverton that does gigs and opens late, other than that there's Wetherspoons. Some pubs in Bletchley close at 22:00 when they can

Yep a lot of them go to the QMC, there seems to a very good night service from Nottingham via QMC and Beeston to Loughborough, for instance.

I did forget to mention the Skylink which bypasses most of the centres.

The only way I can see to get to Loughborough overnight is by changing from the Nottingham Skylink to the Leicester Skylink at the Airport.
