Why weren't they built just that little bit longer (10m) so they could accommodate 5 car class 444's, and surely it would be easier to extend it than install selective door opening?

 How old is the station, and how old are the 444s?

There aren't enough passengers at Shawford to justify lengthening - compare its usage with somewhere like Portchester, that was lengthened shortly after the 444s were brought in.

It's a shame there isn't more parking...

Since restrictions were introduced for on-street parking it's near enough impossible to park and ride their for Southampton.

Use of 'local door' on 444s works quite safely at Shawford, the station is lightly used and the expense of extending the platforms simply isn't justifiable.

Isn't Shawford being set up for when ASDO is rolled out on the 450/444 fleet? That should somewhat remedy the situation.

Yes, from next year we'll need to know exactly how many coaches of each type of stock can be accommodated at each platform whereas we currently only need to know how many units can be accommodated.;)

Fun times ahead for you guys at Fratton. ;) Though I shouldn't talk I'll have enough SDO stops myself to memorise. :P

I thought the computer did the remembering and all you guys had to do was put the release up from any door that was platformed!

How long before a guard tries and puts the release up from a door which isnt platformed? ;)

Very good point, I suppose in the event of some bugger nicking the balise you will have to revert to deselecting units/local door operation.

But wouldn't Southampton Airport Parkway be a better station for that anyway, with it's larger multi-storey car park and better service frequency?

Shawford is free - Parkway is about £11 a day (seasons are less of course)...
