Shaving time nightmares -any advice?

Been getting a lot of bother with cuts and irritation on my face after shaving.

I recently bought a electric razor to see if it would help and although there was no cuts it didn’t give a good close shave like a wet shave does. I have been cursed with very dark facial hair and very pale white skin so anything other than a close shave looks scruffy and untidy.

Does anyone know how to get a good close shave without resulting in multiple cuts and irritated skin.

I’ve also noticed when I apply the face lotion (dry dermatitis prone skin) it starts those annoying cuts bleeding again.

Any advice?

There are many different type of electric shaver, both mains and battery operated.

This is the model that I use, and it seems to give good results.

With an electric shaver, you need to make sure it is fully charged up or has sufficient power in the batteries.

You also need to make sure that the shavings which collect on the inside are cleaned out regularly with a stiff brush, which is usually supplied with the shaver.

You don't say what sort of lotion you are using. I had far less irritation after switching from a liquid aftershave to a cream or milk type.

With wet shaving the trick is to get the beard well softened. The advice for using a cut-throat us to lather, strop, apply more lather and shave.

I’m sure this is a silly question, but have you considered not clean-shaving?

I have sensitive post acne skin on my face with some moderate scarring, and it was a nightmare to shave closely. I grew a trimmed beard as a result. Fortunately that’s the fashion now and it looks alright on me. No need for a razor to get right next to my skin any more except to trim the edges.

Alternatively....grow a beard like I did forty years ago and all (most) of your problems will be solved!

My new electric shaver is a Braun series 9 (quite a expensive one) which is both wet/dry use and comes with a head cleaner to keep the blades in good condition

When wet shaving I used Gillette fusion 5 razor and usually a sensitive skin shaving gel which does deliver a good close shaving but can also cause a few cuts particularly around the chin area.

I would let my facial hair grow out so I wouldn't have to bother myself with shaving, were it not for sensitive skin/acne driving me up the wall about 3 weeks after each shave (I usually wet-shave). I prefer being clean-shaven anyways; feels and looks a lot tidier.

The only real relief comes from shaving it right back to the skin. I soak my face, cover my lower face with creamy lather, shave where needed until I'm finished; I apply more lather if I feel the need to. I used to nick myself fairly often when I first started shaving solo at ages 16-17 thanks largely to inexperience, but have of course gotten a lot better in the years since. In the same vein as @MattA7, I have very pale skin that contrasts with my very dark brown facial hair, so a badly bodged shaving job is rather noticeable.

Coming across sensitive shaving cream and post-shave balm for sensitive skin really was a boon, don't find myself clawing at my face post-shave nearly as often as I used to.
