A typical commuter-belt part of north-west England
I need some assistance in tidying up a matter that has been worrying me when looking at the line of the Wakefield, Pontefract and Goole Railway.

Sharlston Streethouse was closed in 1958 and the new station of Streethouse was opened in 1982. How far apart are the two station sites and what was a typical service that served Sharlston Streethouse in the 1950's.

Paul - I think the original station may have been several hundred yards to the west. (Click on the pictures below to go to the larger original pictures on the Geograph website.)

This closed (and now refurbished into apartments) pub stands at the corner of Whinney Lane and Gin Lane, which leads down to the railway to a site just east of what was a connection, possibly triangular, with a local colliery line heading northwards and crossing Whinney Lane roughly where the photographer is standing. It would seem likely that the original station was sited here by the junction?

The original station was approximately quarter of a mile further west than the current station by the level crossing. This OS 1:25,000 map of 1955 shows the original location (just about - it's on the bottom edge, but immediately above the scale.)

I can't say how the level of service had changed by the 1950s, but this timetable for June 1947 shows 15 trains on weekdays and 19 on Saturdays, but no Sunday services. (Annoyingly I can't link directly to the page concerned - it's Table 191; scroll down the list on the bottom left-hand corner.)

Hope this helps!

From NER 1954/1955 timetable -
Eastbound: 7(SX); 8(SO) trains called at Sharlston.
Westbound: 8(SX); 10(SO) trains called at Sharlston.
No Sunday services.
Most of these calls were by Wakefield (Kirkgate) / Goole trains, although a couple started from / went to Bradford (Exchange), whilst one originated from Mirfield(SX) or Sowerby Bridge (SO)
