Sharing network railcard with different tickets

Tomorrow I wish to travel, with a friend, from Cambridge to Downham Market.

My friend has a Network Railcard, which I know entitles us both to use discounted tickets as long as we travel together.

I have a season ticket which covers me between Cambridge and Ely (as well as other places not relevant to this journey).

Am I allowed to buy a network railcard discounted ticket from Ely to Downham Market, and travel with my friend who will have a network railcard discounted ticket from Cambridge to Downham Market? Or do our tickets have to have the same origin and destination for me to be able to "share" their network railcard discount?

The only relevant wording I can find in the Network Railcard terms and conditions says "Additional accompanying passengers for whom discounted tickets are purchased must travel with the Railcard holder throughout the journey", which I will be doing, assuming that this condition is using the same definition of journey as the National Rail Conditions of Carriage section 19 ("you may use two or more tickets for one journey"). However, I could equally believe that this wording in the Network Railcard T&C's is meant to mean we must have exactly the same tickets as each other. Can anybody clarify?

(And for the avoidance of doubt, the difference in prices for this particular journey is so small that I don't really care either way, but it would be interesting to know the answer for future reference on longer journeys).

I agree you meet the conditions

However you may need your friend to show the Railcard as you pass through the gateline at Cambridge, if the staff ask to see the Railcard (which is possible).

But his season is Cambridge Ely and his extra ticket is north of Ely.

Obviously the the friend at Cambridge barrier will need to show his rail card and discounted ticket.

Just to say that we didn't encounter any problems doing this, but that was simply because at no point in the entire day were our tickets looked at by a member of staff: no issues collecting the tickets or with the barriers at Cambridge, no on-board checks, and no barriers at Downham Market.

However, after a bit more searching around this subject I came across this thread which suggests that the "internal" documentation is different to the public T&C's, and says that the origin and destination should be the same when sharing railcards. Not sure what I'd do in the future in a similar situation now...
