Shap ticket advice

Hi there,

I found out on Monday I had to travel from Edinburgh to Manchester on Tuesday returning Wednesday. As the Shap derailment had just happened and the advice was the line would likely be closed all week, I purchased a ticket via York.

I am due to travel back this evening and with the line now open which is earlier than previously advised, will they except my offer peak single via York on the West coast route?

I only bought the via York ticket on their advice.
I spoke me to station staff yesterday who thought it would be ok as ticket acceptance for east coast route would be in place until Friday.

Do you think I will be able to travel via the west coast with my ticket?

What exact ticket, including price, did you buy?

then it’s not valid via the west coast.

EDIT As @Watershed corrects me, this isn’t true because the ticket via Carlisle is cheaper than the one purchased via York.

You can't buy a "via York" return for Edinburgh to Manchester - you can only buy 2 "via York" singles in each direction, so presumably that is what you bought.

Therefore, you can just refund your Manchester-Edinburgh "via York" single and buy a new single routed "via Carlisle". If you have an Off-Peak Single, this will work out cheaper - you will get back what you paid less an admin fee (up to £5 depending on the retailer you used) and the new ticket is £7.20 cheaper.

If you have an Anytime Single then you would be better off keeping your "via York" ticket, because the difference in price is only £3. Your "via York" ticket is also valid via Carlisle (on the WCML) because the "via Carlisle" ticket is cheaper - there is a rule in the Routeing Guide (the document which determines the valid routes for tickets) which states this principle.

The refund needs to come from the original retailer of the ticket. I doubt that will be the company who run the ticket office you go to in Manchester.

Thanks for all your help. I explained the situation to TPE station staff who said it should be ok but the finally decision will be done to the guard.
When they checked my ticket, they scanned it and never said anything.
Was happy to get home sooner.
