I've tried to Google for a thread but can't find a specific one. Could anybody explain the layout and benefits of this, or direct me to one that can?

Any maps, both of the flyover itself and the wider network around it, would be great.

There are several benefits, nearly all involving capacity sharing between passenger services on the ECML and freight to & from Thorpe Marsh (and the Humber ports beyond) to Ferrybridge and westwards.

This scheme to provide a link between Joan Croft Jn and Shaftholm Jn can eliminate disproportionatly vast detours along the ECML.
But meanwhile, the economic arguments for and against coal and biomass burning at these site projected into the future will continue to raise support and opposition to the infrastructure development.

It's been in the pipeline for years, ever since the Selby Diversion opened, in fact. The idea was that this line (Britain's first 'high speed line', it's speed limit has always been 125) would be used only by passenger trains. However, without the flyover, it still gets used by many, many coal trains. As the Selby coalfield shut down, that got progressively worse. I would be delighted to see it happen.

It was approved by the SofS just a few days ago, November 6th. So it is happening, but I see they've completely wrecked the DfT's website again so I can't find their announcement. A general google search found the 'Infrastructure Planning Order' though:

I take it that the actual line will link the line from Stainforth, Hull and Scunthorpe. To the line from Shaftholme Jn to Knottingley.
Just looking for clarification.
Correct.
Map in this document showing exactly that:

The A19 crossing north of Askern is an AHB, if I'm not mistaken, so shouldn't be down for more than a minute or so for each train. Not too much of a problem!

Yes the crossing at Askern is an AHB, but it works more now than in the passed since Grand Central started running, so will be up and down more still when they get the coal trains etc diverted that way.
I guess they will also get rid of the signal box further up the line and put it all into Ferrybridge Power Box.
